With the centre screw removed, should the centre part just pull out, or does it need a trick to remove it?

You don't say what car/engine it is and I don't recognise the part from the picture, but typically you'd need a puller to remove the pulley from the shaft.

I was under the impression that the centre part was removed then there is a circlip which you remove before pulling the pulley
