Hi all,

I've got to put some new rear tyres on my car for the first time since buying it. I've found some Toyo Proxes Sport tyres that seem a reasonable price.

I'm just wondering if anyone has used them and what they thought, or if there were recommendations for alternatives?

Best you can afford IMO

I ran Toyo's years back (T1Rs and T1S's) but no idea what they're like currently

My go-to's tend to be Falken, Vredestein, Goodyear & Michelins. Not tried the latest Conti's though so can't comment; but supposed to be very good

Might be worthwhile having a look at Jon's tyrereviews.co.uk - website & YT videos

Camskill, MyTyres and Asda Tyres have been best for prices recently in my experiences

I had both Bridgestone then Goodyears on my 640i when I had it, quite a few years ago now but both were excellent imo.

I really liked the Goodyear asymmetric 5s but remember getting miffed when a local garage commented on the MOT "budget tyres fitted" - they were brand new and not cheap on the 20" rims! Wasn't even a minor or anything, they just put that in the comments box curse

Just last week I put new tyres on my 640i. I went for some Bridgestones and compared to the churchills that came with it these are brilliant so far. Less noise, seem softer walls, back of the car follows the front where as before the rear felt like it was skipping going around roundabouts. Car feels so different.

I have 19” Conti non-RFT on my GC. Lovely ride. No harshness whatsoever. Avoid RFT if you can (they ruin a 3-series). Non RFT will be fine.

The one thing I would suggest though is 245s are too slim for that power. My 18s were 245 and they used to spin up regularly in the wet with the TC frequently kicking in. I sold them to a man with a 520d Touring where they’ll be perfect. I now run 275s (staggered with 19s) with no issues at all.

I had ContiSport 7 on my 19s (can't get staggered rears in 18") and they are superb tyres. Better than the often exalted PS4S in the wet and cold imo, but not as sure footed as the F1 SuperSport in long sweeping bends.

Not many people get on with run flats, but I actually prefer them. I found my steering to be a lot more woolly and vague on non run run flats. The grip was there, but the feedback wasn't. With run flats I can feel and hear surface texture changes through the floor and steering wheel rim a lot more than I can with non run flats.

Any insurance implications running different tyre sizes to the factory fitted ones?

When I switched to non run flats I did let my insurer know. They didn’t care. And if you read your BMW owners manual it will refer to needing a tyre gunk kit ‘if you run your car on non run flats’. So even BMW acknowledge that run flats are not required. Also worth noting that M cars do NOT have run flats fitted and in mainland Europe you can ask for your 520d to come with non run flats from factory. It’s a UK oddity that we are forced to have run flats on non M cars.
