New Audi S3 starts at £47k in UK

Fancy getting your hands on the most powerful S3 in 25 years? Let's hope you've been saving up...

We’ve driven the new Audi S3. But we can’t talk about it yet. What we can talk about is the asking price in the UK: the Black Edition (which is effectively the flagship trim for the rest of the A3 lineup) is £46,925 for the Sportback, and the Vorsprung (which is the flagship trim reserved exclusively for the S3) is £52,400. If you prefer the saloon model, it’ll be £47,490 and £52,965, respectively. Unlike previous years, there is no ‘entry-level’ version.

If £52k sounds like a lot of money for an Audi S3 that’s because it is. The RS3, which let’s not forget features a much more sophisticated and evocative engine, starts at £53,620 for a Sportback. If you want a saloon, it’s £54,620. But those derivatives will require some ticking on the equipment front: to put the Vorsprung into context, the top-spec RS3 starts at £60,870 for the Sportback and £61,870 for the saloon. So the S3 is expensive, but on insofar as the hot hatches around it are. The most affordable Mercedes-AMG A35 is £46,000. And let’s not forget the outgoing S3 was £44,720. For context, the lowest amount of money you can possibly spend on a facelifted A3 at launch is £32,035 for a 35 TFSI Sport with a 1.5-litre petrol engine.

So like virtually everything these days, you’ll be putting your hand deep in your pocket if you want one. At least in the case of the new S3 you can reassure yourself that you’re buying the most powerful version of the model yet made with 333hp. And, thanks to the introduction of the torque splitter on the rear axle, it has the potential to be the most entertaining version launched in 25 years as well. Although obviously we’re not in the position to confirm or deny that just yet.

Elsewhere the model comes with the usual party bag of standard features (more so, if you include the Black styling pack which includes 19-inch wheels in Anthracite Black) and you get the new diff and 15mm lower sports suspension by default. But, as ever, some of the most tempting items are reserved for the Vorsprung trim, not least the Matrix LED headlights, electrically adjustable sports seats, a panoramic roof and, most significantly, adaptive dampers, which do tend to be a thing worth having on UK roads. Either way, while the other A3 variants are open for ordering now, you’ll need to wait till May 15th to put your name down for the hot hatch. Expect to find out what it’s like to drive before then.

I'm not surprised at the pricing one bit. It will certainly be very quick but a used RS3 would still be my preferred route, if not for the 5 pot alone smile

That's one very ugly saloon car there.

Been on a few track days with previous models and they were rapid. This will be a quick car. Wonder if it is nicer to drive than a type r?

If a Civic type R is £50k then an S3 being a few k few more mirrors history and not surprising at all. I am no longer outraged by these price, just don't care anymore. £10k down and £600 a month for something a little nippy I cant stomach so new cars are are largely irrelevant - long live the classifieds!

Christ we’ve totally fked this country, pre brexit/Covid a top of the line “super hatch” like a Civic Type R or Focus RS was circa £32k, now it gets you a 1.5L A3.

Are those cars mentioned the equivalent of £32k in the rest of Europe?

The rest of Europe doesn't seem to be obsessed with HAVING to have a new car on the drive whether affordable or not. Unlike people in the UK many of whom are too dim to understand even the basics of finance.

Sadly, cars have just got a lot more expensive, just like everything else.

And it's got little to do with "this country". Things have got more expensive everywhere. A lettuce costs a fiver where I live FFS.

The price, it now is what it is…

The other things you mention, society ‘got what it wanted and continually begged for’…

Particularly, I saw and experienced (very 1st hand) the global supply chains being vandalised beyond all recognition through 2020 - till now really, it hasn’t actually recovered…

‘They’ knew exactly what they were doing - baking in ££££££ $$$$$$ ¥¥¥¥¥¥ increases - hand over fist. Now, it’s structural - and will never reduce, not just for cars - everything.

No vaccine for stupidity I am afraid…

£10 grand in and £600 a month - yep…

Lucky we don't live in France. A new FL5 type r is £86K and a Yaris GR £89k or thereabouts due to c02 surcharge so its not just us

Saw the headline image and thought it was a Hyundai….
Not sure what that says about Audi styling now or my declining interest in new cars…..

I think that's a minority in the UK. And those people are generously feeding 3-year-old cars into the used market with the first big hit of depreciation done. We should applaud their sacrifice.

Wow, that's expensive!

Glad I don't need to buy a new car - and like the rest of the country, I'll only be considering second hand cars. Here's hoping those fleet sales contain a few interesting cars...

£32k pre Covid IE 2019 just with UK inflation is equivalent to just shy of £40k today!
So in effect a £7k price increase on same cars.
You for forget for two years inflation was over 10%!!
If you can't afford one I promise you this, no one will make you buy one...

I drove past my local Honda dealer the other day. It had a CRV hybrid with a price of £49,750 in the windscreen.

Visually very boring, these things need a bit more visual theatre to stand out from the crowd.

A pretty uninspiring way to spend £50k. Bradford inner ring road will be littered with them...
