Hi

Looking for some help on this change

Currently have a 2019 530e - It is a great car but I need to change soon as my annual mileage will be going up by almost 2.5x.

With the tiny fuel tank and circa~ 30mpg average, it will get quite expensive to run. Not to mention, insurance is renewing soon and the price for the 530 has gone up by 40% (Even if i change insurer)

My budget is a bit tricky, as I'll be financing the car but essentially;

- 2021 or newer = £30k
- Between 2018 - 2021 = £22-23k

Requirements are:

- Upgraded sound system
- Carplay already included or should be able to be coded
- Not a hatch
- Electric Memory seats
- RWD/AWD
- Ideally reasonable road tax

Options I'm considering:

- 2018 530D (Somehow cheaper on Insurance)
- 2019-2021 Audi A5
- 2018 - 2019 E220D (Coupe), I'd love the bigger engine but they're all out of budget
- G20 320d - Again, I'd want the 6cyl with this but theyre out of budget and finding the right trim is tough.

Looking for any opinions on the above & any other suggestions I may have forgotten - Thank you

If you're not doing loads of short journeys on the pre-charged electric motor then 30mpg sounds right for the lower end of what you'd expect for a large car with a 2-litre petrol turbo.

I'm going to come out with the boring, obvious answer - the cheapest car is almost certainly the one you already own.

Your mileage is going up 2.5x but I can see that you have mentioned what that mileage is? If it's 5k/year going up to 12.5k/year then the saving from going to a higher mpg car is going to take an enormous amount of time to recoup the cost of change. If your current mileage is 20k and going to 50k then it's a slightly different story...

I put 60k on my 530e over 3 years and had 47 mpg average over that time.
This was a mix of town driving and long trips up and down the uk.

Whilst MPG is a major factor, it's also the (Very) small fuel tank and the fact my insurance is going up significantly on this car - I have shopped around and even the cheapest quote is significantly more than what I am paying now. In comparison, most of those cars above are either a) what I am paying now or b) less.

My mileage is going up from c.8k PA to approx 20k PA, so not a huge jump.

At this point, Im just considering what other options I have - If ultimately I have to keep the car, I can make it work.

This is typical

"I always leave home with a full charge: a 60 mile day I get aprox 65mpg, a 100 mile day I’ll get around 50mpg. At the other extreme a 340 mile trip to the west of Ireland leaving with a full charge gave me 46mpg. I’m really happy with these figures."

Are you actually charging the battery ?

What sort of journeys are you doing?

If you're doing no more than 200 miles per day and can home charge then i'd say Model 3 all day long.

I'm doing 2,000 miles/month at the moment in mine and it's chomping through it no problem.

Car play might be a problem though.

Also, the small fuel tank should just be an annoyance rather than a wallet buster - having had cars with small tanks/big thirst, you just have to get in the habit of nipping to the Tesco pay-at-the-pump (or similar) at the start of all long journeys and spend a couple of minutes topping the tank off.

How small is the tank? Looking at a couple of random ones on Autotrader and it says 46 litres which isn't too bad - should get you 300miles per tank at 30mpg.

If you are looking at a BlueTec Mercedes do a bit of research on NOX sensor issues and adblue issues. If you do your research properly you will probably wisely decide not to buy one.

Which is mental as I have a 520d:

I’ve averaged 55mpg across each tank so far (4) - my highest MPG has been 70 and my lowest 35, this morning stuck in grid lock traffic. That equates to 750+ miles per tank.

Even tootling to the supermarket (bottom right) you can see how good it is on fuel.

Mine is new to me and yours the opposite so I get the appeal of changing but I’d buy exactly what I did in your circumstance, a 2020 69 520d M Sport.

The 2020 year is still pre LCI but has the newer dash and idrive 7 so CarPlay etc standard and virtual dash improved.

OK I'll say it again - I think your 530e is broken in some way, if you search people are getting greater than 30mpg for a 520i of similar age

Then if you think about your battery (don't know whether you will have the 9 or 12 kWh) it will should be giving 000's of very cheap miles

Probably should have added that I don't really get to charge it that often - However, that is set to change as we are getting a wall plug fitted for my partners EV soon.

Will see how the MPG improves with the charging
