Letter from DVLA - someone applying for V5C for a car i own

I received a letter earlier this week from the DVLA telling me that they have received an application to record someone else as the registered keeper of one of my cars.

This car is in storage, so I phoned the DVLA to state that I was still the owner and keeper of the car.

They said if the car was not at my property, they were quite prepared to issue the V5C to the person who'd applied for the V5C, as they are the keeper.

I said they aren't responsible for registering and taxing the vehicle, so please do not issue a V5C.

They said they will ask for proof that the person on the application has the car, and if they do, they will issue the V5C

I have been unable to get in touch with anyone storing it and have been unable to get access to see my car.

Is there any way I can stop the DVLA doing this?

It screams to me that the car will be stolen and moved on, with the V5 being with it.

Seems insane. Surely anyone leasing a car could apply for one by that logic.

When you say "unable to get in touch" is this unusual? Can you pop round? Otherwise you may have to notify the police.

Surely that’s the issue? Sounds like that whoever is storing has got bored of storing, hasn’t heard from the OP or whatever for so long they halve decided to sell it.

We need more information. How far away is the car being stored, why can't you speak to the people storing it, is it driveable/road legal, does it have a desirable number plate, is it a valuable car?

I smell fish.

If this were your first post, I would think it's school holidays. Very odd.

Other than sorting out what/where your car is etc. I would write to the DVSA registered post and confirm you remain the owner and keeper of the car. There is no requirement to store your car at your registered address surely?

Has the place it's being stored gone bump? If so, it could be the administrators who don't realise that the car doesn't belong to the storage location.

I'd be going to the storage and banging on doors of its neighbors until i found out what was going on

check companies house see if the business is still active

Yes, inform the DVLA someone is attempting to steal your car.

That's if this is the case.

Is someone trying to steal your car?

Or is someone trying to obtain the V5 so they can sell the car for another reason?

This is becoming a 'thing' ever since it was highlighted by Alex Kersten and Taylor Heatherington on their first video together on the AutoAlex channel where Taylor got a BMW 6 Series registered to him after finding it abandoned in a council garage. Have heard of a few people having the same letter about projects they have on driveways and storage after chancers have applied for a logbook.

Id be straight down the storage place and find out what is going on personally.

My other concern is whilst they are applying for the V5 they could be removing parts and/or moving the car as they are assuming it's abandoned etc.

That makes no sense at all. By that logic you could apply for the V5C on a leased car, company car, works van etc
