My partner and I are staying in Palermo for 5 days this June with a few other friends. We are planning on spending two-three days exploring the town (travel permitting as we will have luggage on days 1 and 5) and a day or two heading out of town for beach trips.

Does anyone have any recommendations for attractions in town or specific beaches we should visit? We'll be relying on public transport for the out of town travel.

Just come back from 2 days in Palermo, it was brilliant. We never went to the beaches as didn't have time and did both of the major markets which were great fun and the truly amazing Norman Palace, some churches and monuments, along with a small Mafia museum, otherwise lots of eating and drinking, just wandering around and enjoying the sights.

A few bits were a little bit rough with the usual crazies around the biggest market but we never felt threatened and tbh walked all over the city without any problems just enjoying the place, it is a really crazy city and driving around there was a once in a lifetime experience never to be repeated!

THE beach the locals use is Mondello. I’ve only ever visited by car and the main road gets very busy at weekends. Bus will be a little under an hour but you do need to check on payment. Some buses need a ticket bought in advance, some are contactless and some you can pay the driver by cash or card.

You’ll probably end up on Via Maqueda at some point. It run from the theatre to Quattro Canti and is popular. Last time I was there for the day the number of electric bikes/ mopeds had increased a lot. Keep your bags close and be aware who is around you. It’s not the worst place for pickpockets but they are there.

If you like beer then I’d recommend Ballerak in Piazza Magione. Good craft beer and ok food but there are other restaurants in the square.

For burger type meals, there’s FUD in Piazza Olivella. Burgers, chips etc but with a local twist.

As said the markets are amazing. Plenty of street food to try.

If you fancy a day trip anywhere, then there are plenty of car-hire places along the port. Last time I needed one, it was pretty reasonable cost.

June will be hot so plan for that.

Lastly, I assume you’re flying. The airport isn’t that close to the centre. A taxi will get to exactly where you’re going. Alternatively there is a bus with a dozen of so stops around the centre for €8 or there are shared taxis at a good price but again limited drop-offs. There is a train station but the journey is no quicker than the bus and has frequent strikes, particularly on Fridays.
