Nobody else seems to have picked this titbit up.
The Tories, who applied for the statistics, claimed the document showed speed cameras were "cash-raisers not life-savers".

The Tories say the partnerships are stuck in a cycle of putting up more and more cameras to maintain their revenue.

"The public will be staggered to learn it costs more than £90m a year to run speed cameras.

The biggest surplus of all is in the Mid and South Wales safety camera partnership, which had a surplus of £2,213,926 in the 2003-04 financial year - accounting for 10% of the UK total. It raised £7,281,180 from fines, and spent £5,067,254 on maintaining cameras and road safety projects. The partnership covers the South Wales, Gwent and Dyfed-Powys forces. The next biggest surplus is in Sussex at £1,593,159.
I, myself, I, would go as far as saying that there is probably some creative accounting going on here and now that the Tories have made this statement
This provides yet more evidence that speed cameras are being used as a stealth tax to raise money from hard-pressed motorists.
they had better put a remedy in their manifesto.

Sorry to piss on your chips but EVERYTHING in Wales is sent to you in both languages: NIPs, parking tickets, V5s, road tax reminders, utility bills... the bloody lot! What a waste of money!

Our old paper driving licences were DOUBLE the size because they were bilingual.

Nice!

Hummmm, this just me thinking ......

Lets assume we keep the fixed and mobile cameras and lets also assume that EVERYONE drives at or below the speed limits at all times.

Ok - they will proclaim that our Children are now safe.

But, what will they then do? They are [effectively] then losing millions in revenue and will have to make everyone redundant/redeployed ....

I can't believe for one moment that anyone would turn away a milti-million pound opportunity.

They'd just reduce the speed limits even further.

It's all about the money... ooops.. safety, I mean.
