I ordered a couple of brake cylinder rebuild kits from my local factors and was told that these would be illegal at the end of this year. I also requested a couple of tubes of brake - Girling Grease and was told they weren't stocked 'cos they would soon be illegal.

Normally I'd have said 'B0ll0x' but you can't be too sure with this crazy govt. I've looked everywhere for statute on this and can't find anything. Can anyone shed some light on this ?.

with the w*nkers who are in charge at the moment being such unbelievable numpty control freaks does it realy shock you?......i mean, these parts have been used successfully for more years than most of these tossers have been alive yet suddenly they know more about mechanical components and their failure rates than anyone else alive....i'd love to see most politicians find their cars oil filter let alone be able to show you what a brake calliper or cylinder looks like.

actually i'd be amazed if any of them have ever checked the water level on their batteries, let alone know to use de-ionised water to top the cells up.

Haven't picked up any current legislation on this matter but that don't mean there is something in the pipeline.

Suggestion.

E Mail VOSA at :

enquiries@vosa.gov.uk

with the enquiry and let us know the result.

Thanks DVD - I dind't think of that.

Most of the control freak stuff comes from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister ( such as the prohibition on anyone except for a couple of private companies authorising domestic electrical installation )

If I get any reply will let you know

When the government finally bans DIY car repairs (if they are, but it wouldn't surprise me), I for one will be down to BLiars house with a big bat, and I hope a few other million people will be!

Stupid nannying barstewards.

How many people get killed because of faulty brake fitting a year by DIY fitters.

Now, how many people get killed every year because of faulty brake fitting by "professionals" at Kwik Fit?

When will they just give up on the nannying and let people just live and make mistakes. Life ain't worth living if your not making your own decisions!

i've heard the the brake cylinder repair kits were being made illegal for at least the last 6 years now... still not happened....

as for the making DIY repairs illegal... doubtful... with some of the hot rods and kit cars than occupy our garages and roads... there will be little doubt that your average garage mechanic would'nt want to touch them, especially with the amount of custom parts that get used...... would you want to trust them????

The information Richard C was given was nonsense. And that's a fact.

Yup, should ban KwikFit centres. If you can't change brake pads or discs you need to learn.

Knowing about such important things is good for vehicle safety. I wouldn't trust ANYONE but one of my family or myself to do my brakes on my car! And it's not even hard, which is why it's confusing that people do manage to get it so wrong sometimes (KwikFit).

So far I've ignored the new 'Prescott' laws about electrical installations and gas installations and I've added more power sockets and lighting, with new circuit breaker box, to my workshop at home, and I've just fitted a new gas hob/gas oven to my new kitchen and properly tested it for leaks. I reckon if I was competent enough to design aircraft hydraulics for the Concorde nose in the 60's, I am quite able to connect up a couple of gas pipes!"
If they ban DIY car work I shall ignore that as well. There will always be ways to get the parts and we can 'stock-up' before any such ban takes place. Anyway, all you would need is a friend or two in the repair trade to buy the bits for you.
Don't worry, we'll all be anarchists soon with B'liar's lot in charge.

Some Brake manufacturers (eg Brembo) don't sell the parts for repair, they use the 'safety' issue as an excuse but they're quite happy to sell you a new caliper that you can fit yourself (equally as dangerous as repairing if you don't know what you're doing) but AFAIK it's not law just economics
