The Police are coming under fire here so can I just report that those I had a chat with on Saturday displayed the discretion we admire and credited my account with three points when they could have closed it altogether.

A smile, an apology, and a working knowledge of Roadcraft helps I'm sure.

As many PHers know, I had an awful experience at the hands of a pair of dubious Policemen on the M4 a few years ago that resulted in a significant and, I felt, thoroughly unjustified, speeding ban and fine.

However, in the years since I have had several experiences of being caught fairly and squarely over the limit on various A roads, and have always been treated with discretion and respect. Upshot is that my licence has remained clean since 1996. The vast majority of BiBs are thoroughly decent and reasonable human beings. Their conduct is not spoilt by the one or two craven nutters that exist within their ranks.

I haven't met these nice plod yet . . . Silverback Mike said they do exist, but I've never met one. Every "meeting" simply confirms my previous experiences, and no, I haven't been done for speeding for ages now so it's not that !

I have to say, I have never once had a bad experience with the BiB. Every time I've had any dealings with them they've been unfailingly helpful, polite and cheerful. Personally, I think they do a tough job under difficult circumstances and have nothing but respect for them.

Well posted story on another thread about my parking illegally near a post box on basis that was starting to pelt it down und was in one of villages. To use the car park would have cost £1.00 und I would have been soaked to the bone if parked und walked as sky looked like it was really about open up.

So dropped into layby und ran to letter box. Bib und traffic warden appear just as placing letter in box un they ran up to me und escorted me back to car with biggest brolly ever seen und with a cheery laugh told me "carry on madam und to take care in the rain!" No ticket for the brief illegal park - think they saw me und knew it was just a brief set down anyway - but it was very gentlemanly und courteous of them anyway und kindest gesture was appreciated - und if they lurk here or are members I would like them to know this.

And I would like to thank the very nice German Policeman who I sat next to on a Train to Stuttgart who kindly showed me his weapon. He even let me handle it - although he had to unload it first.

Actually it was a very facinating chat. The technology they employ is amazing. He had a palm pilot that could access the databases for most European countries including photographs of those wanted for crimes.

He couldn't believe that British policeman go out on their own and rarely carry guns. The German police are only allowed out in pairs.

I'll buy you a beer if we ever are at a ph meet, and we'll chat.
The knobs in this job are in the minority, trust me.

I don't think I'm a knob anyway.

I have yet to experience a bad apple, but I like to think that I usually pass the inital "attitude test"

I guess he was concerned that it might unload prematurely while you were handling it! - Streaky

Yes the 'attitude test'. I think its the first thing an officer looks for when conducting his/her business.
It costs nothing to be polite and to be honest just a little humble. You never know what he/she is going to say and it may be just a blown bulb he's stopping you for.

I have been allowed to 'carry on, sir' just because I was polite.

The interesting stuff is always in the small print! But, there is other innuendo (ooh, ducky!) in Debs' post, come to that! - Streaky
