Hi. BOth the DVLA and DSA are very confused about how the rules work for driving one of these trucks on a car licence. Both agencies told me different answers in several calls.

I had a licence in Australia and then Hong Kong. Test passed in 1987 in Australia. When my licence was converted to a UK licence in 2002, it has B and no C1 authorisation.

But my understanding is that if you passed your test before 1997, you only need B. Is this right and do any of the experts out there have a statutory reference that I can refer to.

None of this is for work, just to move a racecar around on.

Otherwise I am going to have to do the whole theory and written test thing...

Do you not need classification C.1 ?

MAM exceding 3.5 tonnes but not exceeding 7.5 tonnes.

Authority:

Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) regulations 1999 Schedule 2 Regs 11 and 19.

If you held a full british licence since before Jan 1 1997 you have "grandfather rights" to drive up to 7.5 tonnes.

Not sure about the aussie conversion thing.

Test passed outside Uk before 1997 as far as I am aware does not count. When that Licence from Oz was exchanged for a UK Licence was after this date was it not?

Only 'cos you have 'C1' authority.

If you don't have it, you can't drive a 7.5 tonner.

'B' authority is not enough.

That seems to be the problem. Looks like I get to sit another test. Only 18 years since the last one...

Any thoughts on what the C1 test is like?

Go to Schedule 8 and scroll to Practical test Cat C which should give you an idea.
