Cant reply in the 'naming & shaming' thread, but when I saw the title of this thread, it seemed appropriate:

PistonHeads then becomes involved as a 'publisher' of what may be libelous, making matters even more complex.
Disputes are best dealt with in the real world through normal channels. Doing it online merely opens a can of worms for the person posting the message, for PistonHeads and for the business being discussed.

Dealers: Punters can test oil & coolant levels of cars in showrooms /on forecourts; see low or sullied fluid levels and comment; and be ADVISED that a 200 point check or whatever will be carried out before sale... dead reassuring? no. I walk away.
If pistonheads is considered a "publisher" and therefore liable for libel... GOOD! Isnt that what this is all about? Public service for the punter, who buys a PC and pays to go online so we can access info and learn from each other... and earn a few quid for the site thru ads? Aint no such thing as a free launch, after all...If Mr Postgate hadn't been fed up with food and poor service, he wouldn't have used his journo position to comment and then insist on higher standards for the snack bar eater / diner, 50 years ago ... and we'd have no Good Food Guide or better standards ...
I'd like to think PH is either capable of or; indeed, responsible for; highlighting unsafe roads, unsafe driving habits - such as the "RedLight? What RedLight?!!" attitudes, along with outing some franchised dealers, who are a wee bit less keen than their standards would suggest...
There seems little to worry about there so, Ted! DONT FRET!
Dealers /traders should be aware that any car with either poor oil or no oil is not gonna last long ...
And why should a post on pistonheads, a site about motors and FOR those who motor, be a basis for having a pop at the site manager? This is a forum for our views, not just Ted's own.
It is clear where a poster posts that it is their own view and as such we should be able to share stories about poor standards, in the buying public's interest, not as a vendetta or personal smear campaign against particular dealers.

I dont know of many Ted, maybe cos a)they're in cahoots, a la vested interests and / or b) if they did, they would be open to counter-claims unless, as in the few cases where I have read negative opinions of dealerships in mags, it is always with an opportunity for the dealership/ service agent to state their case alongside, and inviting further follow up. It has to be handled delicately. But I'd have thought an open forum such as this would be the topic poster's opinion/responsibility, and not in any way the views of the site manager or host.
It is good to be able to inform each other of good service, rather than criticise poor, as then, when people ask about service which has been not so good, a reply such as "I have used them , however in future I would prefer to use...", may carry the required message without incurring wrath or counter claim.
I have seen an ad on autotrader recently, where the used dealership's logo included a claim: '' As approved by Cheshire Trading Standards''. Is this a first?! I never knew TS could approve of anyone, as such, other than by default i.e. they aint never cuught us out yet
