To elaborate - the smilies you're talking about, MrsF, aren't smileys as such i.e. they're not part of this forum. You're talking about posting pictures (that just happen to be of smileys) and so they get treated the same as other photos etc, including the new clickability. My guess is that the "box" around the picture is a visual cue by Ted that the pic is clickable.
