Anyone know how long after your tax disc expires you have officially got to get a new disc? the DVLA haven''t sent me a reminder so I''ve got to fill in the forms but I need my v5 which is currently at my folks house in Devon for safekeeping while I move house. Will I end up getting fined if I drive ?

Immediately. They don't give you 14 days 'cos it's in the post' any more.

in theory, you have to have a tax disc to replace the one which has run out. Whats the V5? If its the ownership one then you dont need it - just fill in an extra form at the post office to say the car is yours (and its a nice short form too!) will you get done for driving without one...er...in my experience no. I never do it deliberately but have just not realised it had run out (DVLA get confused with my cars I think) and the police in general couldnt give a toss - the worst Ive had is "er, sorry mate but we'll have to let the DVLA know - id get one sharpish if I were you" Im sure this isnt official company line (and John posted up for a tax questuion recently) but thats certainly my experience cheers Night

Be careful, the DVLA have tax disc dodger campaigns running in several counties. Seems to be some sort of outsourced effort with private clamping firms. http://www.dvla.gov.uk/other/press_releases.htm Cheers, AdrianR

And you may well find that you local dustbin men are on a commission for reporting cars they see without a valid tax disc. I wondered how I got done once (I was two weeks late in replacing my tax disc and the car was parked on the road) until someone explained how it probably happened.

sheesh, figured you still had the 14 days grace. I'll just fill out the form and sod waiting for the V5 then..

I once got shafted for £20 the week after my tax disc ran out. I had a company car and they'd forgotten to forward the new disc to me. I had road tax, I got done by an enthusiastic rozzer for 'failure to display' Claimed it back on expenses though
