Which track day car for 3k?
Discussion
Hi
Wanting to do some track days over the next few months, but not sure what to buy. Car will just be for track days, so figured as i am going to drive it hard, 3k or less is a good budget. Did think about more, but think possibly this could be really chucking money away.
What would anyone suggest buying? I had thought about a Subaru Impreza, but then also thought just a Golf GTI or something may be the same fun.
Also want a cage fitted, does anyone know who fits these in the Oxfordshire area?
Thanks

And as if my magic in the classifieds is.... I'd be tempted if I had the cash.

I've just started an E30 325 trackday project. Had its first outing at Oulton this week, and performed really well for a standard car. It's cheaper to get a regular 325 and then put and LSD and suspension on than to get a Sport in the first place. I bought mine for £500, have spent £300 getting it through the MOT, and £500 on a head and gasket swap. I've got plans to spend about £4k tops in the next few years, which should cover just about everything short of an engine swap.
Hi,
I've got a 205 gti which has a (recently rebuilt) Mi16 engine in it. The car has a part welded saftey devices cage, is fully stripped, rebuilt rear beam, etc new tyres, spare set of wheels, etc. 309 suspension alround (i.e. wider track). Ready to go!
Contact me if you'd like further info.
cheers

the iS had a close ratio gearbox aswell
£1000 unlikely to get you a rust free 325iS but will easily get a solid 2 door shell. you will probably replace everything connected to the shell in time anyway.
if i was doing it again i'd get a 2 door non sunroof shell, adjustable coilovers with camber adj, recon engine + lsd, colway/maxxsport soft slicks which should all be in your budget no probs. with standard or even tuned 2.5 standard brakes are absolutely fine (not 316 drums though!). next year you'll prob want more power/bigger brakes - for 2-3k you can put in huge wilwoods and an e36 m3 engine - you will always spend more converting a car than buying a track preped car...
If you're going to trailer the car to the trackdays then why not an ex race car. We run ex Super Coupe Rover 216 Gti's for race and trackday hire, they always run on used slicks (cheaper than road tyres) and will be quicker than most inc. 911's, M3's, most Caterfield types etc. and all for £2000 to £3000. I'm not saying that they are the best that you'll buy but as a trackday weapon at a price you won't get much quicker. We have several at the moment but they are hire cars and not for sale but if you would like to try one let me know and we can sort you out with a run and find you one to buy if you like it.
