DVLA to 'inspect my car' ???
Discussion
I'm currently in the process of transfering a private number plate from one car i own to another (that again i own) as im selling the car its currently fitted to. I handed ALL the relevant paperwork to the DVLA & they posted it off to the department that now deals with it as its not something they do over the counter anymore, they said it would take about 7 days to get the new details through.
7 days passed & I have recieved a letter saying they want to 'inspect the donor vehicle'. An appointment time & date has been given, (in one weeks time) & if the inspection is ok the paperwork will be posted the following day. Inspect the car its currently on? what's the reason for this? Why would a employee of the DVLA want to look at the car its currently on? Everything is legal with both vehicles, nothing dogey at all (that i know about anyway)....
Any ideas?

Surely this is for people who buy an un-MOT'able wreck with a nice plate pre 1963 for pennies, have the car MOT'd by Doris Stokes and then apply to transfer the plate to their modern motor? That's what they are trying to stop surely by doing the inspections?
My point being, in your case, the car which ends up with the special plate isn't the one that's been messed about with to get around the plate transfer rules? (Not that either of yours has!)

The reason is to prove the vehicle still exists. Imagine if the vehicle has been scrapped and not registered then it should be able to be viewed. It's just their way of trying to retain some control over the process. I have had a motorbike inspected. It was in bits when it was taken to the DVLA office on the back of a pick up truck but the chap looked at the chassis mumber etc and said ok. It still had an mot etc but needed a ton of work to get it going again.

That makes sence i suppose, the letter did go on to say 'the whole car must be available to be checked' & if its unroadworthy then it must be transported 'with none of its wheels touching the ground'. All seemed a bit odd as its coming off a 4 year old Laguna on to a 1 year old Smart roadster!
The annoying thing is ive already Px'd the car, they are just waiting for the docs! oops! I'll have to see if i can borrow it for half hour....arse

Oops! Better pray that they're ok with it then Gary, as if you haven't completed the plate transfer before p/ex-ing the car, its no longer your plate to transfer!

Yeah had this before as well. As previously said, the chap came out, looked at the car, took the chassis number, and said thanks, we’ll send the documents onto you. I spent more time querying to be seen, than he spent looking at the car..!

I've just imported a car from Holland which was a previous UK car.jj
Completed all the forms, now DVLA want to inspect my car at the local office...but not FOR TWO WEEKS!
Totally impractical and said as I did not have reg plates or tax I had to bring it on a trailer! WTF!!!
Holy thread resurrection, Batman!!! Anyway, I registered a 1980s car, which was made in the UK but originally sold in Germany and reimported to the UK at 20+ years old which was (frankly!) a wreck. I also only had one of the two German "documents" but the nice lady at DVLA Preston just wrote "document lost" on their form for me and gave me a registration mark by fax the next day (so I could insure it - the paperwork arrived by post a few days after).
They weren't interested in seeing the car. It's a percentages game, as somebody said upthread
.
Agree, though, that trailering a car to them is a pain - they used to do "home visits" in the 1980s...
