So what is it?

withdrawl symptoms are setting in now, and I feel that i should practice over the winter.
Done 100+ laps now so I kindof know my way round, but I want to keep my eye in so which one?
The Mrs needs to get me a pressie and this will be it, which is the most accurate.

don't care about cars, gaming stuff, etc...just want the most accurate.

cheers

Ditto this....

But, The Ring on Project Gotham on X-box 360 is meant to be even more lifelike !!

Not seen it yet though.

how does the 'Ring on Forza compare with the real thing? just wondering as finding out for myself would involve flying to the other side of the world...

gt4 has the most accuratly mapped 'ring'. sometimes though it seems as if you're driving a bus on it when you're driving a skyline(size, not handling)though.

not tried any other games

With respect, if you've never tried it on any other game, how do you know that GT4's rendition is the best?

Comparing Forza and GT4, Forza has you start the lap on the straight, and the game physics are slightly more realistic, as are the lap times.

I reviewed the pair a while back for Ars Technica, you might find something in there to help your decision.

Recently I find myself playing more Forza - the AI is much better, even if it cheats, you race more cars, and the custom soundtracks are better than the crappy tunes you get on GT4.

here you go:

probably can't imbed pics from Yahoo, so links here:

http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/a8d91bdf/04a0/__sr_/4

Took these during the demo of the last "Super License" test, which
requires taking a '91 190E Merc around in 7.5 minutes or something. I did a smooth 7:25 on my first try, great car.

GT4 graphics are very fine, but make sure you turn off all driving aids (have to do for each car), and switch the default sport tires to road unless you're used to driving the ring on slicks. Even doing this, its quite forgiving of curb bashing, a bit too much so IMO.
In the demo of the Super License Ring lap for instance, the driver takes SX FLAT at about 270 without going off. Puh-leez.
In general the "AI" of other cars is ridiculous - they'll plow into the back of you even if you move off line like on a TF day, and think nothing of bashing into you if make an inside pass.

Starting at T13 is an anachronism, and pitty there is no rain mode, but just geting home from a long day of work, picking out a sweet car (Chaparral 2D is my current Ring favorite, but a Speedster, Z06 Vette, M3CSL, or Jag E-Type are great fun) and doing a few solo laps is such a great stress reliever. Only need some toasted-brake-pad scented candles, and some slow corning super bikes messing up your lap to make it more real.

The Xbox game would be great if only for the online racing, but I'll get the PS3/GT5 whenever that comes out.

cheers

Why is it the wrong place? Whilst I've never played it and I'm a GT4 man myself (don't have an xBox) when you do tourist laps in real life, you start on the straight. So it would depend what angle they're going for. It'd be nice to start on the straight. It can be quite difficult to explain BTG time to mates that have only used GT4 to know the ring. Don't know why, but it is.

i dont recall saying it was 'best'.
as for the game physics, i kinda feel that the gt4 version is pretty damn good.

Forza seems to be more accurate in modelling tyres that are at the their limit of adhesion, but it's much harder to catch a spin. But really, the AI in GT4 is so terribly pisspoor compared to that in Forza.
