I want to remove the black plastic panel below so I can clean behind it but can't work out how to remove the fastners in the close up picture.

Hayalp!

The one below.
It looks like a gromit on top of a screw but I don't think it is.

Just prise them up gently with a fine screwdriver.

G.M tat I'm afraid. If your lucky you can re-use them a few times. Should be able to get similar ones from any good motor factors though.

Lift the middle bit up slightly and it releases the rest of the clip. Can reuse all the time. Once u lift one it will become apparent. The inner bit is a core that releases clip.

They are on the later cars. You can get the older pop plastic exspansion connectors from the older cars, they fit just as well and are a bit more user friendly as they have a Philips head on them and are a bit easier to remove. Or easier to remove more often when you need to!

Regarding plastic fasteners, anyone know where you can get the ones that hold the front floor mats in place?

I got the front mat clips with my set of mats - might have a couple of spares - sure there were a couple. Will check car when I finally get it back. Apparently local VX dealers finally got parts to repair shop so fingers crossed back on the road for Xmas.

You can use two screwdrivers....If you push one under each side of the centre part inserted in the small slot so they are directly opposite each other, then gently prise upwards.
These are much easier to use than the earlier type and last in a working condition much longer.
