london to manchester
Discussion
Guys, I need to drive from gatwick to manchester over xmas period. I expect the roads to be emptyish. If I go M25/M1/M6, does anybody know of any of those bloody cameras which measure speed over fixed distances. If weather good and roads empty I will do a safe 98 all the way, so any advice appreciated. Cheers
The A50 is not a bad route if you want to avod Birmingham. You come off at Donnington Park on the M1. Takes you past Derby, few roundabouts, dual carriageway with decent vision. Bit more interesting than the M6 and no speed cameras until you get to Stoke. Brings you out a bit further up the M6 at Stoke on Trent.
Go up the M40, its quicker than the M1. Good services at Oxford too. The only cameras you'll find are in roadworks, unless something happens on the M25.
There'll be a few trafpol around as well tugging people for d&d I expect.

the route from A50 - A500 - M6 J15 has no cameras either. And theyv've taken the specs down at J16 so you should have a clear run to manchester
Well if you're coming off the motorways, you want to go up the M1 to J26 and head up the A610 to the A6, to Matlock and Buxton and ending up in Stockport, because I can promise you thats a bloody brilliant drive. I last did it in the Chim at 3am on a cold morning, roof off all the way! Nothing like driving a rag-top under starlit skies with your headlamps for illumination through the forests....

Yeeers but Buxton is full of truvelos and it takes much longer that way. Since the silliness Derbyshire has imposed silly speed limits on the long straights over the pennines. Shame on them.
