It's time for a new motor as the banger is making far too many funny noises.......
So I've just about deceided on a Mk4 Golf GTi
Now I'm ok with the fact that none of the models are really that fast or great but I'm buying on a trim level as aposed to a performace level really as engine size isn't actually top of the list although the turbos are getting priority but at the moment Recaros are more important
Well surfing AutoTrader and pushing the budget 'slightly' I find a V5 with leather I've manage to add it to the short list on the grounds that whatever I buy is getting RS4 rims and the V5's already got them on saving me 500 Sovs, and with a little haggle it would be on the money
So given the choice what would you have?
Whats going to land me with the biggest bills? What are V5 running costs like against a GTi Turbo.
It's main roll in life is going to be taking me the 5 mile drive to work, shopping and a 10 mile B-Road thrash every other day
So over to you VAG fans......

I'd stick to GTi, the V5 does not have much more power, but much dearer to run. Personally, I'd go GT TDI and AMD remap+ Milltek exhaust

I know it would probably be as quick, etc, etc.......but it's a Diesal and I'm just not sure I'm ready for people thinking I'm a tight wad (that don't even know me ) just yet, and although I do a search based on 'GT' a few are on budget but for some reason the penny pinching Diesal buyers don't seem to spec the Recaros, so it's looking pretty unlikely I'll lower myself to new depths, you don't even save at the pumps as it's more than propper petrol and who gives a stuff about fuel economy anyway, drivings about having fun, whether it's sideways around the island on the way to Asda or going down the Cranners

If you're looking at V5s you'll probably be able to get a slightly older V6 4motion for the same money. Mine is for sale shortly !

Back to your original question, you should really drive both.
A V5 is more of a luxury car while the 1.8T is more sporty. Also, it's much easier to tune the 1.8T than the V5.

Which V5 is it, 170bhp or 150 ?

V6's seem to be between £1k-£2k more than V5/GTi's so I don't think thats a going to happen.

No idea yet, I'd make some calls but with everywhere covered in white stuff I'm not leaving the house.
It's a 99 2.3 with winter pack and sports pack....

Doesn't look bad for a starting price of £5k

99 will be a 150 bhp.
£5k is a good price assuming the mileage isn't astronimical.
V6s rarely sell for what they're advertised for - very few people want them.

If you haven't found your way there already, an excellent resource for the MkIV Golf is www.uk-mkivs.net

Hmmmm, Tough choice! I'm with you on the recaros though, they're a must have!

If it were me I'd definately try and stretch the budget to a V6, not cheap to run, but lots more performance and spec, a lot more exclusive than either the T or V5, and you get what was, until the R32, the ultimate MK4.
Otherwise it would be the GTI T. The V5 is smooth and sounds better, but costs ££££ to run, and tuning options are very limited if you decide you want more poke later on.
The GTI T on the other hand is more economical, has much greater tuning potential (200 bhp with only a remap anyone?) and is a bit lighter over the front wheels than the V5, which is a heavy lump.

I owned a 170bhp V5 and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

It was very difficult to drive smoothly, something to do with the combination of clutch and drive-by-wire throttle.

The GTi turbo doesn't have this problem.

To be honest £5k is already streching the budget to the limit, and as 1.8T's can be had for £3.5k and theres a set of 3 month old RS4 rims sitting at a friends house that are mine for 500 sovs I'd be much happier spending nearer 4 than 5k

I run a 150bhp V5 Bora.. I know.. I know, but it suits my purposes, I do about 30K a year on the motorway.

All the period road tests circa 1999-2000 rated the v5 golf badly and the bora very well.. personaly i think this was down to expectation.

as a hot hatch the V5 doesn't have the right character, as a sports saloon it's great, very smooth, (dunno if the 170 chip spoiled this) with reasonable torque with quite a nice engine note.

Cost of running...?? dunno what your insurance would be, I get around 32 to the gallon, but if you drive like a granny you can get near 40. I don't think serviceing is noticably more than the 4 pot.

I bought the car out of necesity, but I am now pretty fond of it.

So... I'd say go for the V5 but expect something a bit more grown up (mature... ok old) than a hot hatch

Cheers Dan

Ok, devils advocate, what about a bora V6 4motion - you can get them under 5k, yes, it isn't a golf, but that was a plus point for me.

Just a thought.

But ideally I'm looking under £4k
And I really need a hatchback option to get push bikes and assorted other pap in and out the back
If I was going to go 'saloon' car I'd be looking at BMW 328i Sports instead, but the Golf is me being sensible and a bit boring, I just hope I don't end up buying a silver one like 99.9% of the car buying public seem to do now days
Hopefully off to see a 1.8T tomorrow, good spec, 3 door, Black, just not sure if it's got the all important Recaros yet

ps One of the posts above suggests that a 170 bhp V5 simply has a different chip.
The 170 engine is actually 20v while the 150 10v so don't pick up a 150 thinking a simple chip change will get you an extra 20 bhp.

Fair cop.. that was me.. I assumed it was just a chip job

...but the point I was trying to make was that I find my 150 really smooth, whereas someone earlier had commented on how difficult the 170 was to drive smoothly.

's all

Cheers Dan
