31 Points? No Problem, Sir

A man has escaped a driving ban - despite racking up 31 points on his licence.

Jeffrey Englander, from Prestwich, Greater Manchester, picked up the points for a range of offences including speeding.

But magistrates decided not to ban him because it would have caused him financial hardship.

The 60-year-old salesman said: "I pleaded hardship and had a fantastic magistrate who let me off. I couldn't believe it.

"I was very apologetic. You have to be humble and the more they can see you are sorry, the more chance you have of getting off."

Englander reached 12 points in January 2003, escaping a ban after saying his work and family would suffer.

He was back in court later that year after accruing an additional 19 points, but magistrates allowed him to keep his licence after he cited emotional problems.

His latest appearance at Salford Magistrates' Court came after he failed to produce his insurance documents and licence.

He avoided the statutory eight points for the offence because of an administrative error.

His escape from a driving ban has been slammed by road safety campaigners.

A spokesman for Brake said: "The 'exceptional hardship' Mr Englander would face if he lost his licence would be incomparable to a family's loss if his continued dangerous driving caused a fatality."

What I don't understand is the rational behind the Brake comment. He was prosecuted for failing to provide documents, how was this "dangerous"? Could someone really have been killed because he didn't carry his driving license with him?

But technically using that picture is a repost too, so should I also post it back at you?
