Plus if you wanted the same engine, you're looking at either an existing 6R4 or an XJ220.
Or cut two cylinders of a Rover V8, which is what they did on the first few development cars.

For the 1st development cars I would guess they would be, but they would be unique castings and not hacked blocks, too much opportunity to introduce issues.

Quite interesting how they done the 4wd part.

Well yes, 2WD only. But if you wanted to go the mid-engine route then short of getting hold of some genuine 6R4 transmission I don't see how you could get 4WD. If you were prepared to compromise on engine location in a quest for a 4WD Metro then you could always try to shoehorn in some Impreza running gear and make a 4R4...

There are other cars with a similar setup, but I'd agree with that point. See my first post above...

I've seen a few home/motorsport outlet-built mid-engined Metros before, sometimes tagged '4R2'. There was one in the Practical Classics small ads last year with a mid-mounted Ford engine, looked completely standard from the outside, just had an engine where the rear seats were supposed to be.
If I was building a replica, I might actually try and use an MGF as a donor. Wheelbase is similar, the engine's already mid-mounted and I bet with more space to work with on the F chassis you could slot a KV6 in there. They do have a bit in common actually - both were developed by Tony Pond. OK, so it would be RWD as opposed to FWD, but with a 'kit car' (in the rally car sense) 6R4 body on a V6-engined MGF chassis, you'd still have a lot of fun, and with the suspension at the right level and a knock-resistant ultra-simple Metro bodyshell on top of it all, doing a bit of rallying here and there wouldn't be out of the picture either I'm sure.

I've got access to chassis now, a carbonfibre/aluminium extrusion tub currently being developed by a friend of mine. The idea is that I'll buy a metro and add on the 6r4 body panels which can be got hold of quite reasonably, then mould it in two main sections. Front clam shell and main body shell including front bulkhead. All of this will then sit like a remote control car body onto the chassis. This would offer 6rf styling and straightline performance with limited investment. The engine would be transverse and drive the rear wheels only. Possibly duratec. If anyone else is could see themselves driving around in the above I'd be interested as this would spread the cost and speed up the process.
