TOCA Race Driver 3 - First Play
Discussion
OK got my copy of TRD3 in the post today (PS2 version) and have had a few hours to play around on it.
First impressions are good, not had time to drag out the wheel so I have stuck to the standard handling mode so far (not Pro-Sim) and even that is quite nice. Its still very sim-cade in handling, but the racing is good fun.
Tried out the Ariel Atom, Lawn Mowers (very silly - should be great after the pub), GT Lights, MG Rally Car, Clio Cup and Caterhams. All great fun so far, particularly the Caterhams.
Graphics are good for the PS2 and the tracks look nice, best bit is the average of 20 cars for a lot of the grids.
Good fun all round and well worth getting, I will update as I have time to play around with it more, but its got a hell of a lot of content, both in terms of cars and tracks.

but have played it on my mums xbox and like it. grweat fun and better then toca 2
Not got a 360 so thats not an issue for me, but I went for the PS2 version over the X-box version due to the lack of a decent wheel for the Xbox.

So what does everybody feel about how it compares to TRD2? Is it that much better? Because from what I saw of it id didn't look that much different bar the new tracks and cars.
IMHO it is better than TRD2, the track based stuff has had a decent tweak but the main difference is with the off-road and rally cars. These were very poor in TRD2, and TRD3 has moved them on massively.
The damage engine has also been improved, switch it to sim mode and careful driving is a must. Also very welcome are the flag penalties, cut corners and/or drive dangerously and you get drive through penalties.
I have TRD2 and don't feel short changed getting TRD3.
Got mine in the post this morning. After a few hours of racing online, ive found it to be a really good game! and huge fun, even just with the cars that are available at the very beginning of the game (renault clio's, gt lights, etc). Graphically, its not really a jump from TRD2, but the way its set up is a lot better! especially the feel of the cars, and all the extra bits to stop people cheating in the online parts of the game, it certainly levels the playing field out! Definitely worth buying, but if you arent sure, rent it!
Very impressed with the PC version.
Codemasters have been guilty in the past of releasing new versions that were only really slightly better than the previous (CMR05 should have been CMR04.1) but this is certainly a big improvement on RD2.
The addition of qualifying makes up for the crap in the last one where you always started back half of the grid and the control seem better in that I'm not just barging through the turn 1 melee but can actually try driving through it.
When you guys do online, do you go from within Gamespy, from the online within the game or from the network within the game...?
I'd certainly be up a for a session or two, British GT cup at Brands, Silverstone, Donnington, Castle Coombe and Oulton Park

Got my copy the other day for the xbox. I deffinetly prefer it to the old one. Altho just got xbox 360 and annoyed to find it didn't work on that, so now cant put away old console. Does anyone know if downloading the pack that allows you to play more xbox games, works with this game?
Playin yesterday after losing the rugby to the jocks, i felt like i wanted to smack the scottish guy especially when he starts complaining in a middle of a race.

I've been debating whether to get this game or not.
How are the physics and driving aspects? What are the pluses and minues when compared with games like GTR/GTL or RD2?
With the pro-sim handling turned on the physics are good, but not to the same level as GTR/GTL.
Overall its a much, much better game than RD2, more cars, better championships, improved damage and good AI.

How does it compare to GT4?
GT4 is much better looking and a very polished game with far more cars and tracks, but TRD3 has grids of upto 20 cars, challenging AI and an excellent damage model. That said GT4's main focus is on road cars and TRD3 is all about racing.
Physics wise I would rate TRD3 much higher than GT4.
