I was behind and landrover today and noticed the middle of the rear plate was behind the tow hook assembly.

I presume this would render recognition difficult or impossible.

Would this be a reason for a pull or MOT failure?

How much of it would you have been able to read had he been towing something?

I'm sure any goodsighted policeman who wished to see the number could manouver to do so, whats the problem?

The anpr system will just misread a digit or two which is nothing unusal anyway, I have first hand evidence on paper here in front of me, of a misread.

If you are towing there is no requirement to have a rear number plate on the towing vehicle, you must have one on the trailer though.

If your index plate was obscured by the Tow bar then it would be a ticket. Its hard to differentiate at the roadside from the person who hasnt got a clue or the one who has deliberately put it there to stop Gatsos or Conjestion charge cameras from reading it.

Its bread and butter stuff really for Trafpol.

As has already been pointed out, if you are towing a trailer without a plate but the one on the vehicle can be read from behind without any obstructions then theres no problem.

My pet hates are HGV's without a plate on the rear and the despatch rider who has a conveninent chain hanging over the plate or a dirty plate when the rest of the bike is clean. Theres no excuse and very little sympathy.

How much would the ticket cost?

Also, am I right in saying that the perp could request treatment under the vehicle defect rectification scheme whereby he's issued with a producer and has to report to a cop shop within x days to prove the defect has been rectified?

Or indeed, in the case of a dirty/obscured numberplate the defect could be rectified there and then, also for no charge?

I know when my van's numberplate became completely obscured by dirt, I was asked to clean it in front of the officer and it was free.

The ticket is only £30.

VDRS is at the discretion of the Officer. I honestly dont know anyone that has given a VDRS in my department and i certainly havent in the past 12 years.
Its either a talking too, wipe it off as you say or a ticket.

Believe me, its quite easy to detect a smart arse or piss taker at the roadside and thats the common sense approach that i certainly take.

Actually there is an excuse. The lovely children who populate croydon have a new game - nick the plate off the trailer. As I have to pay for it if I lose it, it stays in the cab.
