I got busted last year for an expired SORN. I declared the car with an SORN about 14 months before, but never received an acknowledgement from DVLA, so didn't really know when the timer started ticking on it. I didn't receive a SORN reminder, just the fine! I complained to the DVLA that no reminder was sent, but they said "we normally send out a reminder, but we are not oblidged to, so tuff - pay up". A friend of mine was done at the same time in similar circumstances for 3 motorcycles!

Guess what? 1 year later and again, no reminder has been sent to me or my friend.

Is anyone else getting SORN reminders, or do we think that this is a concerted attempt to swell the coffers of the DVLA?

Thanks, that's really helpful. The website says it's not due for another few weeks, so maybe I'll get the reminder soon.

I got a reminder, but forgot to action it. I actually went to get the tax disc out of the car to take it to the Post Office for a refund, only to find it has expired already. I'd forgotten I'd only taxed it for 6 months, and since the engine blew up and is on the bench the Chim have been covered up for ages now. I declared SORN straight away, and have had an acknowledgment, but no fine yet. No doubt one will land on the doormat soon enough.

What a bleedin palaver though.

I'm going to send off a whole bunch of them this year, one for '06, one for '07, one for '08 etc. with a note telling them to keep the forms on file until I let them know otherwise. It's going to be a while before I can imagine striking up the enthusiasm to get back to grubby spannering on the Alpine!

I know they'll probably complain and won't accept the post-dated ones, but it's worth it for the sport!

I do wonder if ther're having a bit of a splurge/revenue raising attempt on this at the moment.

My Grandfather died at the end of last year leaving 2 cars... and other stuff of course ( I may get my 911 yet !! yay !! sorry bad taste ! ) . Anyway his old Metro had been taxed up till August which was the time he went into hospital. He died in September and obviously the taxing of his car had been the last ting on his mind. Come October-ish a letter from the DVLA turned up demanding £40 'or else'.

I sent back a letter pointing out the fact the old boy had died giving the dates he'd gone into hospital and enclosing the sorn application. Within a short while had a really nice letter back appologising and offering condolences and with the sorn thing.

About 10 days ago another letter turned up at his house ref his other car, a 1979 Allegro Vanden Plas. It had been off the road since 1983 apart from being taxed once in 1998 when he intended to use it again but didnt get round to it. This letter was the same £40 fine one but made mention to a letter sent last December which Im sure was never recieved. Ive sent more or les the same response as last time and await hopefully the same response.

As a postscript to this once probate is sorted I will be the ( not so ) proud owner of an absolutely mint Allegro ( according to mother he wanted me to have it - hmmmmmm ) with 19k on the clock... any offers ???

To be honest while the car is worth more than teh average Aggro due to condition and being a VDP I cant imagine its worth shipping over there. They seem to make a grand or so here.

I just wish old Grandad had spent his money on a new Alfasud or Golf Gti in 79.. now they would be worth keeping

sorry for the tread hijack !!
