I did do a search but only came up with one reference which leads me to the following question please:

On my recently purchased PSP I tried to watch a UMD, the playback volume was so low I could barely hear it through the headphones (the games are not so much of a problem), is it the general consensus that I should bin the Sony phones and use a decent set and thus, end of problem???

2 things:

1. Yes, the Sony headphones are volume limited. Get a different pair

2. You can boost UMD playback volume via the settings.

The little remote control round thing is the cause of this, the headphones themselves are fine.
You can disconnect the headphones from the round bit, and plug them into the PSP - you loose the remote control, but if you're watching a movie, then I'm guessing you're close enough to the PSP to operate it directly - it's worse with MP3s as you may have it in you bag, etc.

The little round thing was spec'ed out with the wrong impedence values, so it doesn't transfer the power well, which has the symptoms of volume loss, very basic electronics, and I'm suprised Sony never realised before the release, and haven't done anything about it since.

Many thanks for the feedback guys and confirmation that the Sony headphones are cr@p.
Raify - I will test other headsets, thanks. I did boost the UMD volume in Settings and found very little improvement while still using the Sony headset.
Dave - Under not exactly ideal test conditions, i.e. down the pub with friends (), we tested the Sony headset without the remote section and still found little or no difference, in other words still very poor. I'm as surprised/annoyed/disappointed as you that Sony have done this.
