Right I'll keep it short and pretty anonomous.

My car was parked at my place of work, on leaving work to go home there is a note on the window "sell your car I will pay cash, ring *************" Now my car is parked about 1/4mile off public roads so I presumed it would be from someone working in the units next door.

So I ring the number and say "yes I want to sell the car, shall I pop over and meet you" then he said "no mate I live 60 miles away" anyway they basically made out that I had no choice they where taking the car. So I sold it to them later that evening in a public place.

Today the police are round, the car has been used in crimes and all the occupants of the car are being held in the nick.

I dont want to be involved with these people one bit, the police told me to ring the DVLA and ask for my details to be removed from the log book but on ringing them they are not helpfull and say that the people who took the car can have all the info on me they like. Now I dont really want any comeback on this any ideas ? I thought a letter to the DVLA may help sort things out, other than that I have no idea.

Cheers Gaz

I agree. The problem is not with the money though but with any implication with the crimes which I guess is the worry. However, the police do not have any reason not to believe you and of course no evidence otherwise. It does provide an important lesson that the V5 document should always be sent off by the seller, not the buyer. I, for one have fell foul of this when selling a car to a trader who did not tax it *or* send the document off...

I wouldnt worry too much though. I am sure the police would help with assisting the guys in signing the appropriate ducumentation!

I would write that letter Gaz pointing out that you are no longer the owner of the vehicle together with your fears on disclosure of your details as a previous owner.

DVLA do disclose details to an enquirer but they do state only to those having reasonable grounds. Your letter may negate any reasonable ground....

Did they have Irish accents?

Why did you feel you had to sell your car to them?

Why did you not keep the big part of the V5 with their name and address and get them to sign it then send it to DVLA as is the proper course of action? You only give the small green bit to the purchaser with the rest of the documents!

I think r5 is more concerned about any comeback from the people he sold the car to, not the police. He wants the DVLA to remove his name from the V5 records so they won't know his address........or am I mistaken?

Facelmob you are correct I did do the V5 properly and have the large part ready to send off, however I am now attaching a covering letter stating the problem.

If you have the V5, then the people you gave the car to will not have your address unless .......... you gave it to them

Do it now! The quicker it gets to Swansea, the quicker your address and liability will be removed!

you maybe worrying unduly ,why would they come looking for you ? unless the getaway car i.e your old car broke down on them ! seems they may have more to worry about than you.

Hopefully you can get this sorted - in any event, let's say that your address remains on the V5 - why would they want to come after you anyway? If scrote buys car, uses it in robbery and gets caught, why would scrote feel some sort of resentment against previous keeper, unless they had somehow been involved in grassing up said scrote...

I'm surprised they even bought a car. Most scrotes just help themselves to one, particular if they intend using it for unlawful purposes.

I don't get it??? Why did you feel you "had" to sell it to them?? and why do you care that they know where you live - what do you matter to them?

Am I missing something here?

Gaz - run this past me again, 'cos I think I'm missing something here.

I can't get my head round this buying the car. Without going into too much detail, I've known of many a car used in many a crime. But in general the lag hasn't gone out and bought the car (there is a very rare exception, but it's miles above these tossers).

Sometimes they've nicked the car, done the job then totalled it. Sometimes they've just nicked it 'cos they've wanted it. But they've never left a nice note saying they wanted to buy it. In the very rare circumstances when they've lured someone to a 'public place', they've then just taken the car, they haven't filled in any part of any document.

However, if they have genuinely bought the car, then got nicked, they won't be coming after you. But you could still get the letter off to put your mind at ease. Remember, in 99.9% of the time, things are not as bad as you think they will be.

Final question - are you saying they said they were definitely taking it anyway. I't s a bit unclear (or it may just be me).
