Hi guys,

I fancy getting a console so I can hoon around in a variety of TVR's finest machinery. I'm prepared to buy either an XBox 360 and wheel or a PS2 and wheel - but which one is going to give me the best thrill? How much difference is there graphically? I have a J reg TVR Griff 4litre in real life so obviously the fact that GT4 actually has a Griff in it is appealing. On the other hand the X Box 360 has the graphics of London so I can hoon around Picadilly Circus in a T350 which would be a blast. Finally it seems that the best racing wheel - the logitech pro is only available for PS2 (and of course PS2 is a bout £200 cheaper - which would you buy? I have a high end PC for the rest of my gaming as I'm principally a flight simmer/petrolhead.

I've always been a PC gamer but can't resist any longer.

PS - I might buy today if anyone replies quickly enough!!

You sound like a bit of a sim-player and PGR3 is definitely more of an arcade game, still brilliant but not exactly realistic, GT4 or Forza on the old XBox provide a more realistic take on things but still aren't in GTR's league for realism.

As far as future proofing goes the 360 will have Forza at some point which will no doubt feature TVRs and the PS3 will (eventually) have GT5.

As for the 360 wheel i've no idea how good it is, could be crap, the Driving force pro is still the wheel of choice.

Graphics wise, once you've seen PGR3 in action on a good TV then GT4 is going to look very old.

If all you're after is to drive TVRs in a fairly realistic environment with the best wheel then you'd best buy a PS2 with the Driving Force Pro wheel, just don't expect to get much more life out of the old girl.

what about PC games?

GTL has an (old) TVR Griffith that is great fun (albeit rather a handful) to drive and GTR has a TVR cerbera in it. I'm sure there are other PC games with TVRs in. GTL is also just generally great - we have a weekly league going here on PH with about 15 or 16 runners each week!

Guys,

Many thanks for your views. Well the news is I bought an X Box 360 and PGR3 but was pretty disappointed with it because:

PGR isn't much of a simulator
Graphics didn't blow me away (I'm using an Infocus Screenplay 5700 projector on a 7 ft screen and it doesn't do HDTV - it just downscales an HDTV signal
No decent steering wheel available for the XBox 360
Noisy and bulky - I was fed up with it whirring away in the corner of the lounge all day and night

So I took the machine back and got a refund.

Yesterday I bought a Playstation 2 for £129 with two chart games thrown in and the 8mb card (essential). I absolutely love it. I have bought Gran Turismo 4 and the Logitech Pro Racing Wheel and it's fan bleedin tastic!!!

On my projector set-up I'd say there's not much to choose between the X Box 360 and the PS2 graphics.
GT4 is an awesome game, the opening video is a petrolheads wet dream and clearly shows the game designers really love cars
I find the handling isn't perfect - the TVR's seem to understeer (what???) so any tips on tweaking this would be appreciated.
The Logitech wheel is utterly superb
The PS2 is wonderfully small, looks cool and is silent - important in a lounge.
The PS2 has optical digital out for surround sound, on the X Box 360 all I seemed to be able to feed my sound system was a stereo (red/white phono) audio signal.

In essence I'd say that maybe if you have a HDTV display you will notice a bigger difference between the two consoles but frankly if they cost the same price I'd buy the PS2, for virtually a third of the cost it's a steal. I wish I'd bought one years ago - and I'm a pretty committed PC gamer.

The only thing I miss about the XBox is the wireless controller - but I can buy one for PS2, and to be honest it seems the XBox is more online friendly. I've got a cable router for myNTL broadband but I'm strill trying to figure out what I need to get online - all tips appreciated.

Hope the reviews and views are of interest. All IMHO of course, but I do feel I was taken in by the hype and poor advice in the shops. The sales assistants all told me that the XBOx is leagues ahead of the PS2 for graphics, well not on a non-HDTV display with the games I tried it isn't.

To cure the understeer try buying the road tyres for it, they're the three sets of tyres at the left of the tyre select bit and should all make the car feel much more realistic.

Steve,

I will try changing the tyres - I'm hoping to get a Griffith unlocked today - unless there's a shortcut to do so of course - any tips?

Go to the second hand sections for the relevent year, the Griff appears there all the time (along with V8S's and the ocational Cerbi).
good thing about the road tyres is they are Free!!!
