Perhaps a thorny topic but let's see where we go from here.

Have I got my perceptions right to start with;

Vauxhall VXR's depreciate at the worst initial rate
The Vauxhall basic Monaro is next
Then the Holden V8's
and the "pukka" HSV variants are the best.

But all the cars seem to level off and don't go a lot lower unlike monster 4x4 V8's (X5, Range Rover etc) which seem to continue to plummet in value all the time.

Is that about right?

If so, what surprises me is that the Vauxhall VXR is a premium car in a known (to the UK) brand and so I would have expected them to fair a bit better.

Any thoughts on the whole deal?

My 2p

Used VXR are artificially low at the moment, and represent bargains. CV8's are about right. Holden's are finding a lower level now that people realise there is a similarity in layout and engines to the Vauxhall badged car. HSV is still a premium but will be affected by the Vauxhall badge being bolted on to its products in the UK and therefore increasing the number available. Supply and demand etc.

However it is a flattening curve and will stabilise i am sure.

Definately vxr's especially the 04 models are best value imho.
Prices are on a par with Oz/Nz pricing.
Some older hsv's are overpriced still, as evidenced by the £20K silver one thats been on autotrader for about a year.

Without going into badge issues there is still a rarity value on the orininal HSV's. However you look at it they have 4 doors and the Monaro,s are a different bodyshell and 2 doors. Matter of choice

2p's worth

Reckon GTS 15-17k GTS-R 17-21k(2/4dr) this depends on condition/mods etc.. may be more or may be less

Still wouldn't worry about depriciation though cause at end of day we have performance cars that are reliable great fun and cost a hell of alot less than comparable cars.
And get so many looks from all ages, boy racers in their Scooby whos!!... stare in disbelieve when the GTS-r spanks em in the traffic light grandprix!! all they think is Omega man wants to play, then get respect a nod and a smile...

New philsophy "A HSV a day keeps a smile going along long way!!!!"

Apologies should read
"A Holden based V8 a day keeps a smile going along long way!!!!"

Phew that should stop the badgists!!!!

Think Omega!Used to be Vauxhall's flagship....when it came to depreciation the bugger went down like Monica Lewinski!!!Having owned 5 jags,1 range rover and 3 mercs as my last 9 cars,I really do know all about depreciation. The Monaro 1)will NEVER drop like them,2)always out-perform them,3)be more unique than them and 4)make YOU smile more than them....... job done at great value I would say!

who the hell would want to get rid of either a Holden, a HSV or a Vauxhall Monaro anyway unless they really had to. What else you going to find for the money thats as much fun?

Depreciation is an unavoidable evil! But I honestly believe that exclusivity of these Monaros makes them as bomb proof as they can be!!

Besides, look what happened to the Lotus Carlton, an exclusive car that initially plummeted like a rocket, levelled out at silly affordable prices, then become ultra exclusive due to low numbers and is now appreciating in value rather than depreciating.

You guys need to think Global market here.

The Monaro has been sold all around the world.
If prices here get too high that someone can import them from Oz/Nz etc then they will, that will keep prices to a reasonable level. Afterall the HSV GTS Models are down to £10,000 now.
Look at the prices in Oz/Nz etc they should match here.
Sure if the prices go sky high in the home markets too, I would accept your point.
I think it also depends on whether another Monaro is on the cards, if a newer model comes out, which its supposed to (new pontiac gto/camaro etc) then that will also affect pricing as current owners sell up to upgrade flooding the market with older models.

Anyway whats important is not the redidual value, its how much enjoyment you get from it.
I dont intend to sell mine in the forseeable future. If you are a 3 year car bunny then you are basically taking the largest hit possible in depreciation from new. Maybe 60%. Best idea is to buy second hand and dont sell

Where else can you get a large engined RWD platform with fairly cheap and plentiful parts, accessories and in RHD? Why sell? Wanting to sell, in itself, is a means to depressing prices.

When I was over in Sydney in Feb this year,I called into a Holden dealership to check out prices etc and pick up a few hsv bits and bobs.Prices are much of a muchness to those here!Anyway....depreciation is only a factor when you are selling relatively soon after you first buy!If you keep the vehicle for any length of time....how do you value all the smiles?
