Battery replacement: S1

No doubt this has been asked before, looking for advice with regard to a good battery to replace the current one with, ideally light weight, the current one has given up the ghost, although I have not tried to recharge it as yet. Seems to be a annual problem, although on this occassion I last drove her on Boxing day, so there may be a battery drain somewhere.

If you leave the car with the alarm armed for more than a day or two you should disable the internal motion sensor because that sucks battery juice very quickly.

When mine died soon after I got the car I just got a bog standard replacement battery for £40 (same as Audi A3 IIRC) and it's been fine for the last 18 months. If you can put a battery conditioner on the car when you're not using it, you'll save yourself a fortune.

One word of caution.

The elise battery clamp is designed for a specific manufacturer of battery and it does not fit all aftermarket batteries (most of them don't fit properly).

You must ensure that the battery clamp is adapted to fit the battery you install, otherwise you have a major fire hazard in the car, as the battery will chift during cornering and short circuit against the chassis. Quite a few cars have had fires or damaged wiring looms as a result of this.

As an example I have been unable to source a replacement battery for my 2000 S1 that does not require the clamp to be modified in some way . . . I've tried every source of batteries in a 10 mile radius of where I live . . .

Vulcan Batteries of Sudbury, 01787 881299 came to the rescue with a much improved product, a Varta Silver B11, 212L, 175W, 175W the exact same measurements and weight as the Bosch Silver 4P that started out in the car as original, runs 30% higher ampage(ere?) for better cold cranking turnover. Also has the correct lip for the catch plate i.e. identical in size and dimensions to the OEM battery. Should also do for a standard S1.

The company even dropped it off and helped me fit it, all by 1300!!, now that is what I call service!!!
