I apologise if there is a post on this subject already but does anyone have any experience of what happens if you get bagged by an automatic French Speed Camera?
I was there this weekend and got flashed by one, fortunately while not using the buggy's true performance (120ish kliks in a 90 limit). Do they send anything to you in the post? Give up? Can they chase you (bureaucratically rather than physically obviously) through the EU? If I do have to pay it will it be pricey?
Any help appreciated

I don't think you need to worry. I got flashed by one after Le Mans last yr, about 140kph in a 110 kph limit. Never heard anything.

You may get a better response in SP&L. However, AFAIK in order to issue you with a penalty outside the UK, the foreign police must stop you and issue you with a penalty while you're on their soil. Therefore you should be safe (unless you were in a hire car, in which case the hire company would pay the fine and then charge it to the card you gave them to pay).

I thought that this was all automated now and worked as in UK. Certainly, the legislation is in place for the offence to be registered on a UK licence and they can chase you for the money.

If I'm right, the real p****r is that you get points and a fine, where the French only get the fine.

I could be wrong too.

Depends on how the local jurisdiction works. The DVLA if asked will forward your details to that jurisdiction, who will send you a bill. They don't care who was driving.

You are not bound to pay the fine, but if you go back to that place again and your reg plate gets run through a police computer, you'll have a problem.

I wouldn't worry.

I sailed through one at 110 MPH - so 180 KMH in a 130 KMH limit - on the way back from Le Mans last year and have never heard a thing.

I know they were planning on changing the law, but I don't think it has been done yet!

No need to worry, but some foreign jurisdictions will go to the DVLA, the DVLA will give them the details of the RK, and the RK will receive a citation and penalty invoice in the post.
What the RK does then is up to him.

Thanks for all your replies. Will just have to hope that nothing pops through the letter box then.
At least I can smile at the fact that they didn't ding me 24 hours earlier with the speedo slightly north of 155

That sounds like good news.

Just got back from a jaunt round France last week and think I went through 4 speed cameras that flashed at me. One of them I was doing about 220k so i really don't want that one to turn up!!

Got done once by the Gendarmerie who were really nice actually and made me realise again why i dislike the british police, or more specifically, their attitude towards me.

HAving said that - all of the above is obviously a complete lie and I didn't get out of 2nd gear....

I believe this is correct - they don't have the IT links in place (yet). I've been flashed a couple of times in the U.K. the last year whilest driving my French car, and never heard more about it. OTOH, I've been flashed once in Paris (101 in a 90 limit) and had a letter the next day - €90 fine and one point. We do get some points too

I did read about one unlucky English guy last year who was doing 195kph on the tangentiale (130 limit) and was flashed/stopped by a mobile unit. They presented him with a £750 on the spot fine (which he paid) & an automatic ban for 6 months. If you're more than 50kph over the limit here, it's serious. I think when this came up in court in the U.K., his ban was reduced to 3 months.

So - if you weren't stopped, I guess you're safe.

Reading this board it seems that everyone has been to EU this Easter to test out their chariots. However, I fear the days of carefree mayhem on european roads will soon be ended and sooner than planned if Vette78 and colleagues continue to challenge the speed cameras with death defying warp speeds. Generally, the fixed cameras in France are well sign-posted and although the cameras themselves are not always as easy to spot as the bright yellow GB variety they are still fairly obvious. So there is not much excuse for driving past at Warp factor 7.
In France there is great concern about carnage on the motorways particularly as accidents may be very distant from emergency help (and hospitals etc) and France is a big country. Inevitably speeding is blamed as a cause of this. If you look at the road maps, speed cameras are breaking out like a rash. If we believe that speeding is not the problem, then going through cameras at stupid speeds is not going to help to change their minds and the prospect is that there will be many more cameras and other devices in the future. Couple this to an EU wide driving licence and cross border enforcement (in the pipeline) and you had better start getting used to the idea of having someone walk in front of your pride and joy waving a flag. Consider also that we have heard nothing much yet from the "green" argument about burning excess hydrocarbons - and being "green" is trendy politics.
So please beware that posting extreme acts of bravado does nothing to enhance the cause of the (mostly) sensible PH driving community who like to enjoy some of the freedoms of our neighbours thoroughfairs - and would even like to enjoy our own!!

mate of mine was done by the Mont Blanc tunnel cameras just after they went in.

took 6mths but it did come thru, was big, and he paid!

i would say that the cameras are like here. if there's film in they'll have you.

lets face it. if there's one country that'll happily hand over details to screw the motorist...

...its the UK!

good luck!

Points and fine will be coming back 2007 onwards. If you get flashed, like i did last summer, you wont hear anything. You only have to pay if they physically stop on the spot, even then the points wont come back.

To repeat: It depends on the jurisdiction.
Some have been working with the DVLA for years already.
