The Mrs had a parking dink on Saturday (her fault) that at the time we pondered whether it was worth claiming on insurance or not. Mrs car was unmarked, the other car was a bit mashed by the towball and rear-mounted spare wheel (bumper and boot damaged).

The 3rd party has just called to let us know the price. Err, I think we'll be claiming! Does anyone know if insurance companies take a dim view of the fact we considered doing this without claiming and/or telling them? Is it OK to phone up and tell them this happened last Saturday?

My daughter had someone claim that she had damaged his car after all. And that was 5 months after their slight 'coming together'. Her insurance company dealt with their claim - basically told them to f*** off!
I had a similar circumstance to you and claimed 3 weeks after the accident - no problem at all. I just confessed that I had intended to pay myself until I got the quote and it was higher than I had expected.

T&C of my insurers is that I MUST inform them of any accident, I would guess this is fairly standard.

You'll have no problem reporting the accident at such an early stage.

I think you have 28 days with most insurers, but check the T&C of your policy.
