M1 northbound between Sheffield and Leeds today speedo reading 90 mph so true speed probably 85 - 88 mph saw too late a traffic car on one of those raised elevations. He was pointing what looked like a dark coloured cylinder out of the drivers window clearly checking speeds. Didn't physically stop me. Absent a gatso / scamera van don't they need to physically stop you to issue a ticket? or can they just take a photo from a traffic car and issue ticket in post?

The ultimate irony if I have been caught is that I wasn't in the 911 today was in a rented Avensis (derv)!!!

By midnight fifteen days hence if you are the Reg Keeper of the vehicle and notheing through the post you may well breath easily.

Normally under circumstances outlined Plod will make black smoke and report you there and then if you were speeding.

Thanks. Car not registered to me was in a rental (911 gone in due to fluid leak - probably for the best or may have been going even quicker!) so guess I have a little longer than 15 days to wait.

BiB could have been an amateur meteorologist taking a wind speed reading on his donot break

As posted above BiB would normally chase you down if they were interested in prosecuting...

BiB don't tend to get too arsey about 85mph if the conditions are safe, although that speed would be a sure tax raiser to scamerati

Oh yes, I had an anxious moment a few months ago on that score. I was shooting up lane 3 of the A1M northbound near Bramham, heading for Wetherby at about 90 mph. Behind me was an old scruffy Vauxhall, about Omega size, not sure exactly what model. Anyhow ahead of us at the road side was a fully marked TrafPol car parked sideways on to the traffic flow. I immediately reduced speed a bit and moved to lane 2, but the police car was already getting under way as I passed him, so I thought this looks like my first three points, dammit. The old Vauxhall passed me and then tucked in front of me in lane 2, so I dropped back a bit and the police car whizzed past and moved into lane 2 between me and the Vauxhall. I was very relieved to see that the target was the Vauxhall and not me, as the pair of them headed for the hard shoulder. Phew - we live to speed another day!

One thing that did seem impressive at the time was how quickly the police driver had got into the traffic and caught up with us, given that the road was fairly busy at the time. I also wondered what it was that the police driver had spotted to make him give chase, but I have no means of knowing.

Best wishes all,
Dave.
