What's the gangs view on a quiet, but not kite marked system on a bike? I'd like to fit or make something a bit dfferent, that may not have approval. Is this a problem?
cheers

Suspect you will have to find a switched on bobby who would be looking to 'do you' for something else to pick up the lack of a kite mark and add that to their primary concern.

I've looked at the TVR exhaust cans and they dont have a kite mark so technically I'm probably in the same boat as you.

If it's a quiet exhaust realistically what are the chances of a pull on the basis of a non kite marked exhaust; almost nil I suspect.

p.s. you get caught I'm not paying your fine!!!

Bit of a “guy down the pub” story but I believe it to be true.

I was chatting to this guy last night and he told me he and a group of 4 others were pulled on a “routine spot check for cans and plates”. He had a slightly cut down standard plate which he got away with. However he also had a quiet aftermarket can on which was not EU approved or kite marked for which he received a £30 penalty.

So you can get a fine for a quiet can and you don’t have to be riding silly for it either.

I agree with the above post though.

So is it then part of the Constrcution and Use Regulations that a motorcycle exhaust has to be kite-marked?

thanks all. Shame that common sense is overridden by technicality. Thought that noise was the issue, but obv. some plod don't think so.

Forgive me - newbie biker here - but cans must be kitemarked then? The bike I bought a few months ago and have since MOT'd has a Micron carbon can with no kitemarks. At the MOT (pass) I asked the chap if it was legal. He said yep, as it doesn't say "not for road use" or "competition use only". So that's another urban myth then?

Doesn't seem fair that bike exhausts need a BSAU or similar when a car doesn't, isn't that 'Bikeist' but if a biker is pulled for a 'noisy' exhaust but the exhaust has the appropriate BSAU marking and no 'race use only' stamp then what?......

Find an old can, cut out the kite mark bit and weld it on to your new can. Job done.

Easier to get a sticker or rivet-on BSAU strap, (see the ebay link a few posts up), or a set of letter/number punches not that I'm condoning that sort of behaviour of course, because that would be wrong.....

Get an old bike, then the regs don't apply
