A556 near Manc - strange camera in a hatchback setup ?

Has anyone heard of Manchester/Cheshire Police using a small dark coloured hatchback as a camera car? I passed what looked like a dark coloured Fiesta type car parked in a layby last night (11:30pm ish) and I'm convinced I saw a camera lense poking out of the open rear hatch as I passed it.
ANPR or VED checking maybe? Or would they stoop so low as to post an unmarked Scamera on an empty stretch of two lane carriageway, knowing full well that on a clear, dry, night like last night most people would be cruising slightly above the posted 50mph limit?
I turned off shortly after that so I've no way of knowing if there was a marked Traffic car waiting further up either.
I'll be really quite annoyed if it IS a Scamera.
