definately NOT , i reckon its a step in the right direction , but i suppose its down to what you want the car for , 996 GT2 yes great car but i want to be driving a proper hard core porsche .....in my eyes the ultimate porsche and for me it dont get more hard core than the 911 - 993 - GT2 , rare ( 172 ever made - to my knowledge ), valuable ,awesome performance and build quality ,amazing stance, incredible provenance , handbuilt , dream car ....i simply have to own one of these cars in my life, and I WILL.
Isn't it a bit of a step backwards going from a 996 GT2 to a 993 GT2? Woundn't you prefer the performance of the later car?

How does that affect the handling, I've never driven a porchse but Iv'e heard that old porsches have tendency to snap oversteer when you least expect it.
you need to think about what 'old Porsches' means... they've been making 911s since the mid 50s... I think you'll find serious kit like 993 GT2s have fairly high limits that require serious driving skills to get anywhere near. 
Besides, 911 oversteer isn't often 'least expected' since it's nearly always lift-off oversteer / weight transfer to front, given the engine sitting out back. Don't lift when committed!

Fair enough but they've been making them, and refining them, since the 50s. My 993 is 12 years old and therefore an 'old' car... however it's 40 years more developed than the first 911s, and you have to be driving like a right tool to lose the back end. Lifting off in very high speed corners will do it, but that will unsettle most cars.
The 'reports' you're thinking of relate to early trailing arm suspension type 911s, which had much nastier lift-off oversteer characteristics.
To be honest there are plenty of other cars with similarly snappy behaviour - I was fortunate to learn how to deal with lift-off oversteer (without killing myself, luckily) in a 205 GTi 1.9 when I was younger - this car was many times more snappy than the 911s I've had. Main difference was that you could pull out of a lift-off slide in the 205 by nailing the throttle (FWD, you see) - a technique that wouldn't get you too far in a 911
That said, if you've not passed your test then I'd suggest avoiding cars like 911s for some time, but definitely get something with shady handling as early as you can - it's invaluable experience. If you drive safety-first boring shite cars until you get your first sports car, you are going to get a rude awakening! I drove my first 993 like an utter pussy for the first month because of the 'reputation' even though I'd had much more dangerously handling cars previously...

Thanks for the advice what cars with "shady hanling" can I get for less than £1000.
^^ Peugeot 205s, though the GTis will be a nightmare to insure at your age. Even the 1.4 XS was OK though, and similar handling characteristics. The newer 106 is similar though less lairy. Older RWD cars like mk2 Escorts are worth it but hard to find at that price without being sheds.
