I appear to have broken my car a little bit ... good news is that at least it was injured in action

Here's what happened - at V.Max yesterday at the end of the main straight I braked down and when I went to change gear ( I cannot remember whether it was my first change in to 4th or second change into 3rd) I got this "crunch"!

First thought was that I'd missed a gear, so I tried again, same "crunch" ... through every gear!

I pulled over and could not get Reverse, 1, 3 or 5, all at the top of the gate. Manged to get 4th and trundled back round to the start.

Andy Fearnes kindly had a play with it once it had cooled down and the general concensus was that the clutch had simply got so hot in the high temp (32 degrees) and combined with the heavy use, it was sticking (can't remember the exact words Andy used).

Anyway, I can now get all the gears except 3rd, which goes in, but only with a slight "crunch" (the sound you get if you sometimes don't depress the clutch properly, don't know how else to describe it except crunch!).

1) Does anyone know what the damage might be (is there an obvious one?)

2) If I need the gearbox out to be overhauled (G50) are there any improvements I can have done, such as a short shift kit as on the 915 box?

3) Does anyone know the best place in either Manchester or Leeds to do such a job?

4) Is it likely to be horrendously expensive?!!!

Any thoughts appreciated

Just a thought try to bleed the slave cylinder, it could be there is a bubble in there stopping you getting full movement of the clutch plate. hence not being able to get the gears, might be that third has just got a bit of a weak synchro.

If it is the box then it won't be cheap so try the clutch first!!!!

Is this a job that I can do easily myself? I don't normally make a habit of trying to fix things myself when it comes to the internals of my cars as they usually end up more broken!

Agree it's most likely to be a clutch fluid / air bubble problem brought about by the fluid getting vhot at vmax....

Having conferred with my local guru on most things mechanical... that'll be StuB ... the most likely problem seems to be either a worn or, (most likely) slightly bent gear selector dog. The clutch/gearchange seems to be ok on all the other gears, it is only 3rd.

The gearbox as a whole seems to be in pretty good fettle also. I will take it out for a test tomorrow evening when it is completely cold and see if it is still complaining.

Wouldn't totally surprise me if I had managed to bend something as the gears take some hammer when I'm trying to ring the last once of acceleration out of it!

Thanks for the input so far guys

ah, I was trying to figure out who that email was from. Yes, 144 every single s*dding time with a slight headwind and stinking hot temps. Though I could have carried more speed through the bottom corner in hindsight. Because it was just so hot I didn't do even half the number of runs that I would normally do.

In answer to your other question, it is only 1 3/4 miles to the timing beams and they seemed to be a little closer than usual this time, so no, I couldn't get to max speed in the distance. Went through the beams still accelerating with about another 300 or 400 revs to go. (however, V.Max was actually achieved somewhat earlier in the day than anticipated )

I would have suggested clutch release fork as they can bend in 3.2 G50s... maybe check with someone more technical?

But would that only be apparent on one gear Dom?

Yeah, I considered that... but maybe synchro on 3rd is just that bit more worn or something. I'm not sure. I just know that the clucth release arms do bend making gear selection more difficult - and some gears are always more difficult to engage than others...

Just a point of interest but what oil are you using?

It will most probably be 75/90 standard gearbox oil for that model.

Only reason I ask is the Ultima boys swear by Swepco in their G50's.It wont cure your immediate problem but may be worth looking at as an upgrade upon refill?

ah, thanks Wayne, I'll try to remember to ask Strasse about that when they take a look at it.
