Hi Guys,

I've had my 911 for nearly 2k miles now, trouble free all the way but tonight the coolant light started flashing. I've read the manual, low coolant level or a faulty engine fan. Trouble is I can't seem to open the coolant cap!! It's too tight I'll need to get someone to look at it tomorrow.

Anyone else experienced this problem? Hopefully it's nothing major.

Thanks

John

Have you tried opening when its cooled down? Had a problem on the golf - if the coolant level is low is farkin hot and the pressure builds up so its a pretty tight fit on the cap

Also, if you do get to open it, all the gas escapes, and the coolant has a go at popping out too, so if you're doing when the engine is hot, just open for a bit to vent, then tighten it back up as the coolant bubbles up

Had my 996 for 4 years now - the coolant light is a common issue (and has happended to me twice) - usually caused by a leaking coolant tank - almost never covered by the Porsche extended warranty.

Not too expensive to replace though. Can't remember how much.

Had a few problems with coolant.

First was a basic stone(s) in the front radiator causing it to leak (which was pretty obvious), second was a slow seal leak at the joint where the OPC had emptied the coolant when replacing the two radiators in the first problem......

you should also know that the smallest ever imaginable use of coolant will set the oh-so-paranoid coolant light flashing. dont be confused if you open it and all looks well, i once had to top mine up with a shot glass of water.

Agreed. Just keep an eye on the coolant level first thing in the morning and check if the 'top ups' are keeping it that way.

Oh and make sure the coolant cap is fixed back on properly. Found out the hard way when I didn't do that. Stopping the engine and the back pressure pushing a large quantity of the coolant out the back of the car was a little 'worrying'..

Yes the infamous flashing red light....

you will have a leak somewhere as said either rads or coolant header tank and possibly the drain plug washer has corroded away or the blanking plate on back of block is weeping but get it repaired promptly...

You need to bleed the cooling system in a certain manner to avoid the light coming back on you need to have cap off (obviously ) coolant temp low...open the return valve manually (black unit sitting on top of header tank with steel pull ring pull it up to vertical)then get some one to rev car up to 4000 rpm maybe a little higher so all the coolant is sucked out of the header tank and gets to those front rads then hold throttle steady at 4000 rpm do not back off throttle...keep filling the tank up it will take some coolant...when it is finished and no more will go in put cap back on straight and tight release the return valve ring pull and then tell 2nd person to stop revving...

hope this helps
