OK finally managed to persuade one of my mates from school to get on BB so we're sorted there.

Looking for a good 1v1 FPS with the limitations that his PC is valve driven. XP, Celeron 2.4, 256 Mb, not sure about his graphics card but probably commensurate with the above.

My machine's no speed demon but it's OK. A64 3400, 2Gb RAM and 256 Mb graphics. We're both on a 2Mb pipe.

Any ideas ? I have an extensive 'library' of all FPS.

UT was always a good un, that should run alright. CS can become too one sided as the weapons work on a buying scheme. Quake 3 would also be good.

Best bet - this is what they do online. Install rocket arena for either UT or Q3. OSP would work for Q3 as well. Basically this mod works in rounds, and you get all weapons at start of the round. It's the most fun and fair method I've ever found of 1vs1. You can probably extend this to other deathmatch games, but I don't have that much experience with much of the other main deathmatch ones (that would still run on his pc).

OK thx, I like the idea of the setting of CS although never played it, failing that we'll try Q3.

Is Soldier of Fortune II - Double Helix playable as 1v1, that game was awesome, few years old now.

Battlefield 2 is great for killing with guns, tanks, jeeps, planes etc.
CS-source is great for realism i find.
I've just seen something new out on Steam called 'the Ship' - its a FPS but with a difference - you're on a cruise ship and have to murder a specific person without being murdered yourself or being seen doing it. its only just out, but its cheap - 15 quid i think - and all multiplayer.

Isn't BF2 a very recent game, I have it here but haven't installed it yet. It looks the muts but doubt it would run on his 8086

Xiphias, had a look at a friend playing UT and it didn't really look my bag, it seemed way too fast and consisted of him jumping about all the time to avoid being hit.

Still to get CS on his machine, can you play that 1v1 ?

Think we're looking for something a bit more tactical, I've played OFP and all the add-ons to death and loved it but never online, it's not installed here so can't remember if you can or not. We're looking for 1v1 or squad v squad deathmatches not co-op play.

We had a great blast on Links 2003 but could only get it working online the once, bugger. No idea why now.

The original Unreal Tournament is a fantastic multiplayer FPS and runs very well on even low spec machines. Runs great on my laptop is a Celeron 1.5ghz with 256mb and no graphics card

Even the Demo from here www.unrealtournament.com/utgoty/downloads.html allows you to play multiplayer in several different arenas. Definitley worth a download to experiment. Maybe we could set up a PH server on there for some group blasting?

The original Quake will run on anything made in the last ten years and offers pretty decent multiplayer action, even by today's standards. And you can get all sorts of mods for it in Quake C that make for tons o' fun.

I remember one occasion where I secretly installed a mod that gave me special weapons, like a "glue grenade" that looked like a normal grenade but stuck onto whoever or whatever you shot it to and would remain there until you triggered a remote detonator. My friend came along (those days we did multiplayer over 56k!) and joined my server, and we played normally for a while. Then I quietly enabled the glue grenade and shot him a few times. He made some cheeky remark about me having bad aim, so I found a quiet corner in the game, and started a countdown from 10 (using in-game chat). At 6 he thought I was mad, but at zero I blew him to bits. I was on the floor crying with laughter after that and he immediately called me and wondered what the hell happened. Ah, fun times.
