Thinking of buying a 944 turbo
Discussion
Gents
I am possibly going to be selling my elise and am seriously looking a a 944 turbo. I just have a few questions.
Should I worry about the high mileage that most of them show?
What sort of mpg do you get(I don't really mind what it is but just like to know)
Is the engine easy to get 300+ bhp from?
What are the main things I should look for when buying?

Mileage is nothing to worry about, although there are some well maintained low mileage ones about...less that 80k
20mpg
300bhp is easy, just a off the shelf chip
Main things to look for are service history and condition, when did they last have the belts changed, has the clutch been done, headgasket?
What's your budget? I know where there is a nice black one.

And once you've bought the car, how much is the mod budget?
Best bet is to start with a clean, unmodded 250 Turbo, so the insurance doesnt hurt too much, then move forward from there. As discussed here, and in depth elsewhere, up to 300 is fairly easy, and explained in detail by people like ProMax motorsport. Its the getting from there to 400bhp that seems to be very timeconsuming and expensiove...
I'm thinking of selling my unmodified black (fastest colour) 1989 Turbo after the children and I take a trip to Cornwall for lashings of ginger beer in AUgust, as I've moved to London, and dont use it enough to justify it, even to myself, at the mooment.

When i was hunting for a decent 944 I found that good Turbo examples are hard to find and for £6k you might struggle (I did). I opted for the S2 instead which has enough power for my needs!.
Shame your post didn't say "Im thinking about selling the Elise and buying a 944S2" as I may well be tempted to go the other way in the not to distant future!.
Good luck with the hunt im sure you wont regret it they are awesome cars.

Really good 944 Turbos that have been maintained properly are getting few and far between. £6k will buy you a below average one (or a bargain that someone has underpriced). Davyboys is definitely in the above average condition, but there are more and more dogs out there, that have signs of rust, or signs of an owner who can't afford to maintain it properly. So it gets sold cheaply and someone else buys it who then gets hit with a big bill, so he has to sell it etc etc.
Look long and hard at many different cars all around the country until you get to know the difference between a good and bad one, then just wait until yours comes along. It may be a while but it's worth it. Don't get hung up too much about originality. Everything can be unbolted (then sold on Ebay) and the original parts (like D90 wheels) are much cheaper to buy than the tasty 17" Cups you may then be selling
