The £150 deposit scheme is being considered to ensure that allocation can be more fairly managed. In particular, it is believed that Sony is looking to avoid the ‘eBay phenomenon’ that occurred with the launch of Xbox 360 whereby some consumers who managed to acquire more than one unit – on deposits as low as £5 – sold on their extra machines for well above the RRP.
Already got a free deposit down on mine via Gamestation.
And surely this £150 thing will just make it even more profitable for those who decide to buy them to sell, Mummy and Daddy aren't going to know about the PS3 until just before Christmas when little Timmy will stamp his feet and demand one, Daddy then pops into game only to find out he should have put down a deposit of £150 months ago, he then jumps on ebay and pays a ridiculous amount to keep precious little Timmy happy.
Although they did start making them this week so they have started significantly earlier than Microsoft did so the stock levels at launch could be higher than they were for the 360.

I thought gamestation cancelled all their preorders as they were overwhelmed by the response??
Reports I've heard are that major retailers (Game, EB, Amazon etc) won't know how many they're getting, and won't except preorders until October. So I don't know how play, gamestation and dvd.co.uk can possibly be taking official preorders.
Anyhoo, I wouldn't mind paying £150 deposit... just means a lot less people will be able to fork out for one straight away.

You can pre-order on play.com, not sure if they're asking for a deposit though.
No deposit, though they do make you phone them to confirm some card details as its a large purchase. I pre-ordered mine 6 days after they started taking orders, long before it was in the papers so I'm quite high in the list and very likely to get one on release day. They'll be sending them out on a first come first served basis.

But you get 3 crap games with it :P
Why bother, just wait an extra month to buy it after they come out in the shops, and save yourself stress and having £150 tied up with some lying distributors!
I foolishly paid £120 for a DFP steering wheel when they first came out then had to wait 2 months while the company got their stock in! Lying ******s!

and from what I hear chip yeild for the PS3 is pathetic.
Actually that's quite standard in the IC industry for the latest technology nodes. You tend to find that until the ramp-to-volume order arrives, yield isn't a priority. We went from "a similar position to Sony" to "industry-standard" in only a few weeks on a project that had an agressive ramp from the customer. Until they ramp, the cost of bad die isn't a problem.sheepy said:
