Okay...

Ive had a PS2 for many years (had a 'normal' PS before then) - I'm a occasional (or casual) gamer, I'll play on it now and again - if I get a great new game, I might have a week or two of regular play, but I am by no means really 'into' it.

I largely ignored the Xbox, and the 360, but having seen the graphics and some of the games, I have been tempted to trade up.

Now, in all honesty, i'll probably only be after Halo and PGR (and the like)... but I didnt get one because of course, the PS3 is on its way...

I have no intention of putting down a deposit, or paying a fortune on flea-bay, i'll probably wait till 6-12 months after release when the hype has died down, shops have stock and there are reasonable packages available...

However, the only genre that is PS only that interests me is the Gran Turisimo - and 4 was more of the same, so I'm not that bothered about the PS3 version... plus the annouced prices sound pretty hefty..

hence considering the 360 again...

So - I was hoping for opinions on the Xbox 360 - worth it? Which package is the one to go for? Where to get a good deal? What are the 'must have' games?

Also - for the xbox live - the console will be downstairs, whereas the ADSL termination will be at a router upstairs in the office - can the xbox connect through 802.11b wirelessly?

Or should I hold off for the PS3?

I'm in the exact same boat as you and am planning on getting a 360. Go for the premium package as you get larger memory and wireless controllers.

My colleague regularly beings his into the office and we mess about online. Some of the games are pretty astonishing. Project Gotham, Perfect Dark and Hitman Blood Money alone would be enough to keep me entertained for a year.

The only reason I was going to get a PS3 instead was the new GTA game but since they announced it'll be multi-platform I'm almost certainly going to buy a 360 within the next few months.

I have the same setup with the 360 downstairs and the router upstair. No problems with wireless connection this way

No sorry, I'm a bit clueless with technology. So long as it has good games then I'm pretty much satisifed.

I guess you have to buy an additional bit of kit though?

You have to buy the Xbox 360 wireless USB dongle, nothing else will work. There £55 from play.

(well an ethernet wireless bridge will but lets not go there...)

I'm a long term PC gamer, but the 360 has been great, I have PGR3, Oblivion, Hitman & LOTRBFME II, looking to pick up COD2 cheap soon so I have something for everything.

Some cracking games coming out soon too.

Get the premium/HDD package for sure.

Just get the console which has the games you want to play. Unless you have a burning desire to try our blu-ray and hope it wins the format war with HD-DVD, in which case wait for the PS3.

From what i've read about the two (XB360 and PS2, not really interested in the Weeee) there wont be much difference between the two on multi platform games. And there won't be much difference in price if you intend to get the premium models /w wifi and play online (XB360 price drop withstanding )

So it pretty much comes down to 1st/ 2nd party games, other exclusive titles and anything the console is capable of that appeals to you; like Blu-ray (or HD-DVD if/ when MS release there HD-DVD addon/ XB360 /w integrated HD-DVD), PSP connectivity, online stuff?

Basically the games, buy the one that's got/ will have the game you wanna play

Not much difference in price? £280 for the top whack 360 and they reckon close to the £450 price mark (at least £420) for the PS3... That is a big factor.

I'd say 360, but I'm biased!

On a cost basis, I go for the 360 every time...

On a technology basis.. the 360 is very impressive, noisy, but impressive... I like the fact that, at present, it ships with a standard DVD drive and will provide additional capability, with an external unit, for HD-DVD.. If the upcoming battle goes the same way as Betamax and VHS, I'd much rather a modular capability than a dedicated one!

Do it.. then download the speed and style packs for PGR3.. After playing again tonight I can confirm that the Z8 is wonderful!

Someone did a breakdown where by you add the cost of the wifi thingie and the online sub for a year to the cost of the 360 and the price is petty similar. I guess they used the RRP rather than any deals that are going though...

If you add on the premium pack + the HD-DVD + the wifi addaptor you get to roughly the PS3's price. thats if you need/want it all, many dont.

Forget the online sub, you get free online with the 360, just not multiplayer games, I bet sony have something similar lined up.

As PURE games consoles, there technicaly about evens. games will be fairly indistingushable in performance or quality.

Thing is your paying 100quid + purely for Bluray on the PS3. It doesnt help games at all - its SLOWER than the 12x dvd in the 360 for loads and games wont break DVD's 9gb limits without TONS of full motion HD video, then it becomes an interactive movie, no thanks. It better be a top class BR movie player because thats what your being forced to pay for.

IMO do what I did buy the 360 now, play next gen games now, theres a lot of top games out now and some absolute crackers coming soon.

I'm very happy with my 360. IMHO if you are considering paying the extra premium for the PS3, I'd be tempted to go for the 360 and put the difference towards an HD TV.

I don't have an HD TV yet, but having seen the difference in picture quality I definitely want one as it makes a huge impact when gaming.

There are some great games too for the Xbox, if it's a Gran Turismo thing you're after PGR3 is great and Forza 2 isn't far off. I understand that GTR is cmoming soon for the 360 too - full on GT racing action!

I am maybe slightly biased as I had an xbox before trading up, but I do love the PS2 too - there seemed to be more games available for the PS2 but I couldn't comment on their quality as, other thand GT I didn't play any of them.

I've been thinking about a 360 with the price cuts recently- in terms of wireless connectivity can it be used as a media suite? My set-up is very basic: PC upstairs and a Mac laptop both connected to a Wanadoo livebox wireless thingy. Utilising my wireless network can I send music from the PC/laptop to the 360 which would be connected to my Hi-Fi?

I'm usually pretty okay with tech stuff but I don't really want to splash the cash if it's not got any added benefits other than gaming as I won't really play on it that much.

Although I'm keen to play PG3 :-)

I think you can drive share to the windows (xp) machine - and play music from that , anything else I think requires media center edition installed on the PC

Music can be done without a problem, although when I was using my old Xbox, I found that a 10Mb wired network wasn't enough for seemless streaming.. I moved up to 100Mb and all was fine and dandy..

Unless you nwc is 54Mb you might have issues..

The Mac part can be done with a piece of software called Connect360 - I've been using it for the last 6 months without issue. Neither the Mac or the PC will do video streaming to the Xbox360 though.

A PC will do video streaming to the 360, provided you have XP Media Center edition, the Media Center versions of Vista will also do it when they arrive. It's the only reason I blagged a copy of MCE, will only support certain video types but you can get round this with a bit of video conversion software.
