When Oktoberfest first started it was held in October hence the name. As the weather in Bavaria is better in September than October they moved the date
However, it does usually end on the first Sunday in October unless they deem that to be too early in the month and then they extend it by a couple of days so that it ends on German Unity Day (3rd October I think).
