Is there still a sort of "grace period" of a week or so in which to replace your car tax? Mine expired at the end of last month, and I was undecided whether to just take it to a scrappy for disposal (i.e. stick on ebay for 99p) or keep it running - well I've now got no choice and need it - only to get the car tax I need to drive it 5 miles down the road in it to the post office...

As far as im aware there is not a grace period. Their computer system can still chuck you out a letter.

Should really have SORN'd it to be on the safe side if it was off the road.

There is now no grace period.

Having said that we missed the start of the month by a couple of days and didn't hear anything...

As far as I am aware, the only 'grace period' is that fact that it may take "up to 2 weeks" for the database to be updated with the fact that you have renewed your tax disc or SORN'd it, so in that time you are unlikely to get checked. However, a plod or traffic warden can still haul you up for failing to display from the day it expires onwards, so it is best to get it sorted immediately.

that's the irony, that's exactly what I want to do, only I have to drive the car to do so

If you have all the documentation then go forth promptly to the Post Office and careful where you park whilst inside.

If stopped by Bib, if he does not accept your mission and reports for no excise Licence (very doubtful under the circumstances) he has to submiy form to DVLA who can only authorise prosecution. Having obtained said Liucence then by time form gets to DVLA their records will show vehicle licensed.

Likewise they will not send out the £80 fine as that only applies where not licensed over a month and no record of SORN

The fail to display is another matter and again it would be a constipated Bib to take any action on this. It is the lookalikes that one has to watch.....

If you've the right docs you could do it online. OK, disc might take a couple of days, but at least you're taxed!

Thanks DVD, will do it in the morning on the way to work

TSB - I have to admit I have absolutely zero confidence on the online system, having been told of numerous problems by people who have tried!

I've used it several times, spot on.
