There aren't many Porsche specialists up here in Scotland, so whenever I stay with my relatives in Coventry, I try and visit the specialists around there. This morning I called in at Shirleys.

It is a fantastic place - no annoying sales people, but also a nice, enthusiastic atmosphere. The cars on display were immaculate (if a little expensive for me!). The 928GTS was my favourite, although the GT3 Mk. 1 PGB press car was very nice. There was an interesting 'project' sitting round the back too - a Tiptronic 996 LHD track day car, with no rear bumper.

Has anybody here actually used Shirleys for their Porsche? Is it recommended to do business with?

I'm looking to buy a 250hp 944 turbo (or now possibly an s2 as finding a decent turbo for sensible money is hard) and work near shirleys. Im considering using their partner company for servicing (porsche tech). Anyone used them or dealt with shirleys?
(sorry for the post hijack).

Bought my 928 from Shirleys a few years ago. Was a lovely car and they were very easy to deal with. I would agree that the car wasnt the cheapest and if I'd known more at the time I probably wouldnt have paid the price they were asking, but once I'd seen it it was too late! Didnt have much to do with Porsche Tech but talked to Martin there at some length when I picked the car up and he was a very friendly helpful guy. The car had an excessive battery drain and was a bad warm starter both of which they told me was reasonably normal on a 928 and on both of which they were wrong. To be fair my local OPC couldnt fix these two problems either and charged me £1,500 for trying (Porsche tecs input was gratis). Finally fixed by Paul Andersen in Stroud who really does understand the car and doesnt cost the earth. I've subsequently used Northways who have also been excellent.

I bought my 993 from Shirley's 3 years ago and I agree with the comments on prices being slightly higher than similar indie's. It was also quite hard to do a deal and they didn't budge much on the asking price. But I have been very pleased with the car and I take it back to Martin Brown (Porschetech - next door to Shirley's) to have it serviced and sort any problems. This is bearing in mind that I live in Colchester and Birmingham is a bit of a trek for me, Martin seems to know what he is doing (compared to my local indie) and I have had no problems so far. I would recommend them.

While you're near Shirleys another indie - Autobahn - are just down the road. Heard mixed comments from them and they appear to mainly deal in newer models (996, Boxsters, new parallel imports).

I have bought 6 cars from Carl @ Shirley's and Martin at Porschetech next door has serviced them all, I have had no problems and always received honest cars, and been dealt with professionally and in a friendly way.

I bought my Boxster from Shirleys who also gave me a good trade in price for my then 968 Coupe. I took my Boxster back for Martin to service (I live near Bath) and he did a great job. Would visit/purchase from them again if I get back into Porker ownership.

I certainly wouldn't entertain spending my money at the other place down the road...

Cheers,

Steve

Diesel130, yes my local indie is Autostrasse and I have used them a couple of times. They fitted my PSS9 suspension kit and did a couple of services with no problems but I decided to use Martin Brown again as I had a check engine light problem that Autostrasse couldn't fix and Martin seemed more confident in finding the problem (and managed to solve it without too much expense). As I only have the car serviced once a year and only use it a weekends, it's a good excuse to give the car a blast to Birmingham to have it serviced.
