Does anyone know if 18" Turbo style wheels off a Boxter would be a straight forward fit on a 993 Targa? I recall reading somewhere that the Targa required some modifications before 18" wheels could be fitted. Then again I seem to recall loads of stuff which I probably imagined in the first place

A 993 should have a steering rack brace fitted before running 18s - about £30 from Gert; though later ones (I think) will have it as standard.

Re. the Boxster wheels themselves, not sure - check the offsets - a 993 is ET55.

Dan's on the money with the steering brace but since Targa's are later cars i would have thought it'd have one already.

Re the offsets, 10" rears on a narrow body 993 (like a Targa) are ET65, something like 8" fronts would be about ET55.

18" fronts should be ET52, rears should be ET65. Boxster wheels are likely to have the wrong offset and might need spacers.

steering rack brace was only for '95 cars not targas....

boxster wheels have different offsets from memory so won't work as the 17's don't..may be different for the 18's ?

but although some say Porsche never approved 18's for the Targa, only as it was never mentioned but enough cars esp in the US have 18's... I'm switching to 18's at the next tyre change

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I quite like the original split rims but my son fancies 18"...so we'll see

Clive, this is what the bracket looks like:

Targa on 18's shouldn't be a problem since you can put 18's on a cab, and though you will lose a little on the ride quality you will gain a lot on turn in and steering feel (and you'll lose most of that understeer too).

I was of course thinking of my 17" wheels (7 front and 9 rear) when I said ET55 ... oh well ...

As above, the steering brace is only needed for early cars (94 and 95 model year). It's a belt-n-braces approach, since the original 18" wheels available for the 993 were significantly heavier than the standard 17" wheels.

However it's not clear whether you need a steering brace if you're putting 18" wheels that are lighter than the original 17" - my 2002 Carrera wheels are lighter than the OEM 993 wheels.

Incidentally the Targa had special lightweight wheels as standard to balance out the added weight of the roof - putting heavyweight 18" wheels on the Targa may make more of a compromise to the handling than the same wheels on a Coupe...

Dan - any news on getting your car back?

Alex is right, the brace should only be needed for heavier wheels, and the Targa speedlines probably weigh about the same as 2002 Carrera wheels.

Clive, what wheels is your boy thinking of? 2002 Carreras or hollow spoke turbo twists would be okay for weight i think...

Fingers crossed for Friday, though I have a suspicion Saturday may be more likely.

I called in on Monday to see the engine in bits. Barrels and heads were all refurb'd and looking like new. They were about to change the O-rings on the through bolts and then it was ready to go back together.

He fancies the hollow spoke turbo twists Pete, but will probably wait until the tyres need changing as the present tyres are as new.
