Ruf 18" Speedlines - too big for a 964 C2?

Hello,

I bought my car in February (’93 964 C2 – now running 300bhp + original shocks, but lowering springs) with Ruf 18" (10 and 8.5 inch wide) Speedlines already on the car. Not sure how long they had been on the car before I bought them.

I recently bought two new rear tyres and often the tyre rubs on the right rear arch (this had never happened with the old tyres).

My car is being serviced at the moment (by a reputable indie) and I asked them to look into the rubbing - They have said that the wheels are too big for the car and this has led to very uneven wear on the front wheels – almost bald on the inside and 4mm or tread left on the outside of both wheels. They have also said that there is now little adjustment in the suspension to correct this and that the best thing is too is to go back to 16/17 inch wheels. They also said that the car would perform better on smaller wheels.

I like the 18 Ruf’s and I was looking into refurbing them until I found out this news

Does anyone else run 18” wheels on an almost standard 964 C2?

Did the 964 cup have 18” wheels?

Any other suggestions other than replacing the wheels?

How do people sit on the argument for better performance from the smaller wheels?

Any other views?

964 never had larger than 17" wheels.

Maybe going back to standard springs will give you the clearance you need?

964s have never had anything bigger than 17" originally.

It is because of the tyre. It will have taller side-wall on a 17" (in order to achieve the same rolling circumference) and will therefore absorb the bumps better. This combined to cornering and you will find that it will actually improves the overall grip of your car.

Really??? What about the 18" speedlines fitted to 1992 cup cars

front 8 x 18 ET 52
rear 9.5 x 18 ET 47

Mine has GT3 18 wheels offsets are 50 and 52, I had to put about 1.3 degrees negative on in the end, the fronts on 225 rub a little on full lock, the rear 265 I had to move the oil pipe in a little to avoid rub.

7.5 fronts and 9 inch rears, My S02's have a small rim protector on, others like Conti's have a larger rim protector, maybe this doesn't help?

One of my 964 RSs had a set of Gemballa 18" rims on it when I bought it.
It ran 10" rears (with spacers) with 265/35s and 8.5" 225/40 fronts.
The tyres didn't rub on the arches back or front...................but it handled like a pile of sh*te until I put the original 17" mags back on it

My C2 runs 18in GT1 Veloces that are 8ins and 10ins IIRC. It isn't standard though as suspension is H+R supercup. The fronts rub on the inner on full lock slightly but the fender had to be rolled. The rears rubbed everywhere ( fender edge, oil line, swing arm, inner wing) and needed a (22mmIIRC) spacer and rear wings streched and rolled.

FWIW there's another C2 with the same wheels that needed no modifications to get them to fit, although mine only rubbed on track
