The fun just rolls on.

Continuing my current obsession with monumentally depreciated nice motors, I thought it might represent reasonable larks to look at luxury cars depreciated to sensible or even give-away levels.

What stimulated this latest aimless thrill was a BMW 760Li which was lurking on the dealer network.

This long wheelbase, V12 motivated, silk leviathan was the thick end of an 'undred large originally and yet this gorgeous blue example, circa 50-odd k mile up, was going for £30k. Holy sh1t, that is one vast amount of metal for the folding.

Annoying to me personally is the current state of the world for big, sheepskin Lexoids: for what a nearly new M5 attracts now, a few years ago I mindlessly sunk into this gravity defying, fiscal throat slitting device on wheels. 15, yes fifteen grand puts you into a non-franchised '00-01 LS430, invariably with 'premium pack' (read 'with fridge') and miles between 50 and 90k. Truly sublime quality.

I also love the latest A8 shape: somehow, it's a masterclass in sheer class and these ice cold automtive teutons ferment in me a primal lust for ownership: shutlines from Odin himself. You could just about squeeze into one of the 4.0 TDi or 4.2 V8s with average miles for low-high 20s.

I won't dwell on Bentleys because paper is before me and it would be ruined by the tears but much copy exists as to the insanity these wondrous, preferably blown, dowagers represent.

Finally, could you ever really do this without doffing your cap in the general direction of the clubhouse, offering the expected deference required of the captain's choice, the ineviatble large feline: how about a 40,000 mile XJR8 4.0 in a stunning 'Pacific blue' for a fiver under 20 thou, from a Jag main dealer?

It seems that for those of us wanting to waft in platinum grade baby lotion, things are really rather splendid.

Indeed der, something I have often pondered and I revelled in the fact that my XJR cost me a grand total of not a lot to buy and lost nothing come re-sale.

There is some vast amounts of metal available for not a lot of cash in these eco friendly days.

Although, please don't spout the good word too much otherwise everyone will catch on and prices will creep up!

I want this personally - www.pistonheads.com/sales/92210.htm

Have a look at the previous Merc. S Class.

I can remember being picked up by an S500 at Brussels airport while over on business ....it had double glazing I tell thee ....... twas truly waft-tastic, with an air of granite-hewn invincibility.

Deal of the century has to be ex-demo Phaetons. A Bentley clothed by Burtons, take your pick of the entire range for under 30 large with little more than a lap of the VW unsold-Phaeton compound on the clock. And with main dealer warranty intact.

They represent a stupendous saving on a Flying Spur and have none of the attendant pointing-peasant problems associated therewith. Phaetons are, I humbly submit, the Best Barge Bargains.

Especially if you like Oil burners, the V10 TDi makes all the other luxury diesel offerings look as limpwristed as they are. Though I'm no huge fan of Diesels, in this class of machine they make perfect sense.

Another concuree over here - one of our number (Ehyouwhat, I think) has one of these - might be good if someone could eek a suitable tome of experience from the fellow.

Certainly, the VW V10 5.0 TDi is HURCULEAN ito torque and hardly promotes sloth in the gargantuan Toerag so in the almost nimble-by-comp Phaeton, well, imagine...

...in fact, www.wv.co.uk here I come!

My brother has one and it has since caused me to scoff at any used car advertisement that proclaims its subject to be "loaded".

I tell you, until you've spent a month delving into a Phaeton's gadget armoury thou knows nowt about loaded.

Hmmm, Just shy of £30k for one of these...

You'd have to lose the ruddy great VW logo on the rump, it looks excessive despite representing a brand with little or no cachet (I know, I know, that's not an issue, here).

But, great looks overall, sort of grown up and stately, understatement on an Mezzazoic scale and yup, that engine...

Presumably DMS could expand it's rutting prowess to 350 or so and give the torque profile a much needed fettle...rotate

Yes, if you can put away that genetic brand prejudice it really is a club class Flying Spur derivative (is it, did I really say that or mean it, er...yes, I believe I'm not piddled so lumme - it could well be the ultimate Q luxo-barge with more than a merely aluminium fist in that old, velvety glove.)

I dunno, maybe they'll be £15k next year, will people genuinely buy this?

I have mentioned before a chap of my employ who recently obtained an A8 4.2 quattro with an extravagantly ott spec, 6 months old and 3000 miles young as an ex demo for under 30k, against a list of twice that.
Massive metal for the money.

Or, grab a Lancia 8.32. Nigh on 50k in the years of the blessed Margaret and peanuts now....

V12 BMW Mmmmmmm. (also with double glazing). The 750 is amazing I wonder what the 760 is like?
I keep telling the wife the car has got to go, but as soon as I start it up and idle along at 70(ish) the effortless ride just makes me want to keep it more.
So with a new MOT and 12 months road TAX I recon its here to stay for another year.

Added: Yes I know my car is not exactly in the £30,000 bracket but it still feels like it so

Indeed they will Sir as I am currently trying to source such a bank vault of a motor car for my parents.

New Passat money buys Bentley standard engineering and "Get the hell out of my way" 3rd lane presence.

I'm also of the opinion that it is very easy on the eye from all angles.

Ahh.... the Phaeton.

This is a car that has really attracted my attention.

Utterly stealthy. One could own the most loaded model, serenely tool around in it in blissful excess and all the while the proles think it is a Passat.

I tell you , in this envy saturated society we live in , a Phaeton W12 is the car to have.

magnificent !

Indeed. Within the family we have a V10 and it's sublime.

Slightly different budget (and maybe league I concede) to some of the above, but am considering one of the heaviest depreciating cars around, namely an Alfa 166. Will be early next year before I am needing to buy it (when lease runs out on current comfortable wheels) but it is top of the list at the mo. £4k can put you an early 2000 3l V6 with leather and all the toys....quite who buys them new I have no idea.

Edited to add:

www.pistonheads.com/sales/93732.htm

And I actually think this might even be slightly overpriced given the highish miles, but it is bloomin lovely.

Indeed, my dad used to have one.

A fantastic barge that can make you smile - and that V6 sounds awesome!

Well TC, I'm not sure who buys 'em, either but praise be they do!

EVO mag had a long termer a while back and it always possessed a unique qesthetic charm with a perfect, Italiante interior including that trademark ribbed seat leather.

The engine note redefines cultured and at this money, any quality niggles probably fall into the "...and?" category.

Excellent choice, methinks. thumbup

Re Loonster's find of the 87k mile, £15k S500L - er, STAGGERING!!!
