Thinking hard about next porsche, ( sold the gt3 as need 4 seats..yes that old one , truth, maybe wasn't as good a driver too ) looking at two classic turbos
http://pistonheads.com/sales/93106.ht

And the white one thehairpincompany.co.uk

Both v v cool I think.

Anyone know the original prices of these cars and any tips welcome on buying a 930turbo. Car will be 3rd or 4th car so weekends and trips, 3k per year. What will hold money more?
Thx

Both beautiful cars. The cab being an 88 car will probably have a 4 speed gearbox. 930 turbo's suffer from quite a lot of lag between gearchanges and the 5 speed box was a big help.
Personally with such low mileage cars I can't imagine you'll suffer any depreciation. Guess the answer is do you want a coupe or a cab, drive both and then get a pre purchase inspection done buy a reputable independant prior to parting with the hard earned. A good one will cost you peanuts to run.

I'm agog at the white turbo .. What a beauty to behold , and surely a car for life , or even 10 years of motoring with a possibility of making a profit at the end of it all .. I know I'm only an old romantic at heart but that car really has caught my attention...

BUY IT!!!!

A 930 with a 4 speed is to be avoided. Any car should be put on a dyno before hand, as I'll bet it's down on power for one reason or another...

That's a bit harsh! 4 speeds are fine, turbo lag can be reduced with headers and an updated turbo.

I've been in a 4 speed 930 with 500bhp. Lag? No siree.

Re. the white one: 19000miles. 17 year old car and not really run in. Such low miles sounds great but probably with various problems (deposits, internal corrosion etc.) due to not reaching full operating conditions often enough.

Better to buy a higher mileage car with regular use and full service. Cheaper too!

Beautiful looking car though.

PS: 959 mirrors? Look just like cup mirrors on later cars to me.

I'll have the cab please.yes

The white one, although achingly beautiful, looks like a 100% enthusiast concours garage queen. I'd be scared to put any more miles on it for fear of anything coming near it.

The Cabs are massively rare IIRC only 30 odd UK cars and maybe a bit more of a sensible buy as a comparison. Not to mention a few grand cheaper!!

I have had a very long day so may be thinking of another bloody 911 incarnation with a limited run, so reserve the right to be wronged

OK, a stock 4 speed is not so great. Most drag cars have less than 4 gears so... Any how, in stock form the performance is not great, normally because it is on the original turbo, WUR is buggered, needs a topend, valve guides are shot, vacume leaks etc. So, having been through this myself, i suggest you put any potential car on a dyno, and i'll sell you a forward struck at 85% of original BHP.

Don't get me wrong, my car has a 930 engine (well almost) and I am a great fan, but 930's are old now and the technology is dated. Any stock car needs at least the upgrades that the 965 had over the 930, and preferably a 5Speed box, to be acceptable by todays standards.
