Yes at last I have the funds, the parking and the permission from my wife to purchase my first 911.

What I know is that it will be a 993 manual in a darkish colour with less than 80k miles. My budget is about £23k.

What I'm not sure about - and all views are welcome - is...

1 whether i should go for a c2 or a c4. i think i want a c4 because this will be a second car that my wife will also need to drive at times and we'll also be taking our two kids in the back. i'm no speedfreak anyway and the "pure" 911 driving experience isn't the main reason i've wanted the car all these years. i'm also told that in the 993, the difference between the c2 and c4 at normal speeds is minimal anyway. the downside is that a c4 is harder to find. i will obviously see if i can drive both.

2 whether i should trawl the classifieds, and buy privately using an inspection as my insurance. this is what i've done before (and what i did successfully with a 968 cab last winter) but i'm thinking that, because the costs of buying a duff 911 are going to be high, and because i want this car to be a "keeper" I should bite the bullet and use a good independent. so is the extra £2-3k really worth it?

Also, one small point, does anyone know if a rear brake light spoiler can be removed easily enough. i think it spoils the lines of the car and a car that i like the look of has one.

thanks as ever for all your help.

I'm not sure that a C4 is harder to find... in fact, I think it is the other way around. A good Vario C2 is not common whereas there tend to be a couple of good C4 knocking around at most times. Also, a C4 has a slightly smaller boot comapred to the C2 which may be an issue as you say you intend to bring the kids around. A £23k budget should be ok, but watch out for the car needing a new clutch, dampers etc which will significantly affect your budget.

Re the rear brake light, there are 2 common types: the bridge spoiler brake light which was normally reserved for Cab models and looks (imho) ungainly; then there is also the roof mounted brake light spoiler which sits flush with the roof/rear screen. The only weakness of the roof mounted brake light is that the connection can/often becomes broken resulting in a non-functioning brake light. There is a fix mentioned on pcar.com.

Good luck in your search!

Drive both a 2 and a 4 and if you don't have a strong preference then simply look for the better car. I havn't felt much differnce in normal road driving.

Most of mine have been privite purchases. Get a pre purchase inspection done and you shoudn't have to many suprises. I bough a C4S last year from a dealer and have just replaced most of the suspension at a cost of 2k. I should have had it inspected but didn't bother.
