Ted,

The Mazda advert is popping up every time I enter the Gassing Station today - been fine up until today though.

Sorry to hear that. Might be worth clearing cookies or checking that you've not accidentally disabled them as it relies on cookies to prevent multiple occurrences.

Seems to have stopped after the 10th refresh (and this is the first ad problem I've had on PH), using the same settings as I've had for 12 months. I guess the cookie might have just gotten corrupted.

Yet again these sodding popup adverts are happening *every* page refresh, I've had more than 20 in a row.

It's utterly infuriating. mad

Ted - have you tested the web code on multiple platforms? I'm using multiple Macintosh machines running OS X 10.4 and using Camino (a Mozilla variant) as the browser.

I most certainly haven't disabled cookies or any other subterfuge, and things don't just 'get corrupted' on Macintoshes.

Much as I have no interest in a Mazda, does the popup stop happening if I click it (and dismiss the resulting advert window)?

I use the forums pretty heavily and having to find the 'close' button on the popup on *every* damn refresh is irritating. This happened before, PLEASE test PH against the Mac platform, there are quite a few of us and we don't like being classed as second class citizens.

Hi Cyberface,

Sorry you're experiencing difficulties. I do believe this stuff has been tested on Macs. I don't do it myself as the adverts are supplied by two agencies one of which is responsible for the design and the other for delivery. They deliver millions of ads a year.

I'll get on to them and see if they can help diagnose it.

Cheers,
Ted

Hopefully this will resolve it for you:

The ad was tested on the different browsers and operating systems successfully, however I have now disabled the ad from running on Macs.

Guys,

I am responsible for most of the ads on PistonHeads and while some of them can be frustrating they are also a valubale income stream for Ted. PH doesn't have the backing of a big publisher like EVO and Top Gear. We work extremely hard to get relevant adverts on PistonHeads. Clients these days do not like standard banners and like to be creative and go big. Each overlay (not a pop up) has a close button and should only be shown once in 24 hours. Sometimes this needs to be increased to make sure the campaign delivers on time.

Cheers

V

Many thanks Ted. It has stopped...

I understand the need for a revenue stream and fully support Pistonheads (in fact I'm one of those who would be perfectly happy to be a paid subscriber, I've been here for years...). I therefore as a rule refuse to use popup-blockers and advert disablers on my systems.

However there's definitely something screwy with the popup code and Mozilla / Mac because I've seen it before. I'm not running bleeding-edge beta browsers either (as you may guess given the username and the predictable fact that I'm a systems consultant).

I'd have thought that the Linux crew running Mozilla browsers would find the same, but I doubt both of them are on PH hehe

Sorry to dredge up the old chestnut, but have you thought of a subscriber option where those willing to pay only get the lightweight banner ads and not the intrusive popups? I'm thinking along the lines of Ars Technica forums for example - the non-subscribers are not penalised in any way apart from not getting a 'Subscriber' tag on their forum posts, but it allows those who support the site to show financial support as well as avoiding in-yer-face advertising.

Totally agree. It simply shouldn't happen. It's frustrating for me that the issue can't be sussed properly rather than just turning it off for certain browsers. That is out of my control unfortunately.

A subscriber option raises another set of complex issues. Yes, it's an option but not one I'm ready to pursue yet.
